If anyone in the Nicholson family hated Winona the most, it was unquestionably Shera.
The old saying was true: give a starving man a little, and he's grateful for life; give him a feast every day and then stop, and he'll hate you forever.
Shera was the latter. She had grown so accustomed to Winona providing blood for her son that she saw it as an obligation. When Winona suddenly stopped, her son had two near-fatal crises in three months. In Shera's mind, Winona had pushed him to the brink of death. She conveniently forgot that her son's illness was terminal, that it was only because of Winona that he had lived an extra six years. Without Winona, he would have been dead long ago.
But Shera's hatred was absolute. When she cursed Winona, she abandoned all pretense of being a lady from a prominent family. She also seemed to forget that in insulting Winona, she was also insulting her own brother.
"Shera, shut your mouth!" Julian commanded, his voice cold as ice.
Meanwhile, Louis, having just returned, looked at Winona with concern. "Nona, has it really been this difficult for you? What have you been through these last three months? You still haven't managed to get divorced, and it's actually come to a court battle? Are you… are you having second thoughts? Is that why you've let it get this far, why the Nicholsons are treating you with such contempt?"
After all, three months ago, when she'd given him the divorce papers, she had said that filing a lawsuit was a last resort—a way to force her own hand so she couldn't back out.
Winona shook her head. "It's a long story. I'll explain everything once we're inside."
She had to tell her lawyer everything.
"What's there to talk about?" Janetta snapped, physically blocking their path. "Are you going to scheme with your lover on how to squeeze more money out of our family? My daughter is right, who knows how much you've stolen from us behind our backs! Let me tell you, we have lawyers too. You won't get a single penny from the Nicholson family. And whatever you took before, you're going to give it all back!"
After a moment, Janetta shrieked, "On what grounds? Why should you get our family's money?"
Felicity also stepped forward, confronting Julian. "Julian, if you give all of your personal assets to Winona, what about me? What about us and Tiana? Besides, Winona is Tiana's mother; she should be paying child support…"
"You shouldn't even be here," Julian said, his gaze turning frigid as he looked at Felicity. "You're the one who told my parents and my sister to come, aren't you?"
"What are you talking about?" Felicity stammered, hurt. Just last night, he had accepted her sincere apology. Why was he so cold and distant again?
"This is my divorce hearing with my wife. Please leave," Julian said, his tone leaving no room for argument.
