The second man's voice nearly drowned out Xander's.
Xander turned to see Yves Prescott. Yves nodded at him, clapped him on the shoulder, and gently nudged him aside. He then walked to Winona and wrapped a protective arm around her.
"Janetta, this is a restricted construction site. Please take the young miss of the Nicholson family and leave immediately. Otherwise…"
"Otherwise what?" Janetta snarled, glaring at Yves. "Prescott! I know you and my son have been at each other's throats for years, but what do you think you can do to me?"
"I can dismantle the entire Nicholson family," Yves said, his voice deceptively light.
Janetta stared at him in disbelief. "What did you say? For this… this piece of trash my son threw away, you're going to marry her? And you'll destroy our family for her? Prescott, has this woman bewitched you? Are you an idiot? This isn't how a real man acts! Being so reckless over a woman… are you even a man?"
As expected of a high-society matriarch, Janetta was a master of provocation. But she had forgotten who she was dealing with. Yves Prescott was a man who was wild, ruthless, and never played by the rules. He was immune to manipulation.
"Ha!" Yves let out a short, sharp laugh that was both chilling and arrogant. He looked at Janetta, his expression calm.
"Matriarch of the Nicholson family, you're right. Everything I do is for a woman. I'm a fool for her. And I don't care if she's damaged goods or worse. Once I've decided she's mine, even if she were the filthiest thing on earth, I'd make everyone around me say she's a treasure. Why? Because I'm her man."
Not far away, Felicity, still wearing her safety helmet, stood frozen. The helmet was askew, but she didn't notice. She could only stare at Yves. She had risked her life to save Julian just to earn his love and protection. But now she realized that Yves's love and protection for Winona was a thousand times more profound, more powerful, more possessively male than anything Julian had ever shown her.
Without realizing it, Felicity's fists clenched so tightly that her nails dug into her palms.
Meanwhile, tears welled up in Winona's eyes as she listened to Yves's declaration. Her voice choked with emotion as she whispered his name, "Yves…"
He looked down at her, a wry smile playing on his lips. "So, planning on marrying me to keep the wolves from your door?"
