The way he smiled, half-joking but not quite, gave her the creeps.
After a few seconds of tense silence, she finally relented. "Give us three hours. If we can't come up with a solution in three hours, we will move out. Is that acceptable?"
"You can have more than three hours. You have until midnight. After midnight, Mr. Prescott will begin demolition on this mountain. At that point, your house will have no water or electricity, and if there's a landslide or a collapse, we won't be held responsible." With that, the burly man turned and left.
Felicity turned to Old Mr. Shepherd, whose face was cold and grim.
"Grandpa, it seems we have no choice but to ask you to go and apologize to that old woman from the countryside. Let's just swallow our pride for now. Please, Grandpa?"
Old Mr. Shepherd sighed. "I already said I would go apologize to the Perkins family."
He looked at his family, his voice filled with weariness. "If an apology from the two of us can save our family, then it's worth it. After all, Felly is pregnant with twins, and Jason has only just returned to the country. Once Felly is married into the Nicholson family, and everything is settled, the Shepherd family will rise to new heights. I've always been able to bend when necessary. An apology is nothing."
He then turned to Old Mrs. Shepherd. "Old woman, you're coming with me."
"I'm not going! You want me, a college-educated woman, to apologize to a dirty, filthy old hag from the countryside? Never! I don't owe her anything!" Old Mrs. Shepherd rolled her eyes in disgust.
"So you'd rather our entire family sleep on the streets tonight?" Old Mr. Shepherd asked.
Old Mrs. Shepherd lowered her head, silent.
"Let's go! You're coming with me to apologize," he said, his tone leaving no room for argument.
