"Yes…" Old Mr. Shepherd admitted honestly.
"Just because my husband was in trouble, you forced him to marry you! You're shameless too!" Old Mrs. Shepherd interjected, her voice filled with grievance.
Helga ignored her and glanced at Mia. "Mia, since these two shameless old fools have come to our home, let's not be polite. You know I've lived my whole life for revenge. Slap that old mistress. Slap her until she learns to keep her mouth shut."
"You got it, Grandma!" Mia rolled up her sleeves and delivered four quick slaps to Old Mrs. Shepherd's face, two on each side. The blows left the old woman dazed and wailing.
But Mia didn't stop. She kept hitting her.
Finally, Old Mrs. Shepherd collapsed to her knees, begging, "Please, no more! I know my place—when the true wife speaks, a mistress like me should stay silent."
"To be your age and still be so pathetic and deserving of a beating is a rare sight indeed. Who would believe it?" Mia sneered and stopped. She then looked at Helga. "Grandma, you can continue."
Helga turned her attention back to Old Mr. Shepherd. "You old fool, did you not tell your mistress that during those turbulent times, my father saved you and let you recover in our home, and it was you who insisted on marrying me?"
Old Mr. Shepherd, his face red with shame, glared at his wife. "Why do you always have to be so confrontational? I told you, Helga didn't want to marry me at first. It was I who insisted. I've told you so many times, so why did you have to provoke her just now? You deserved that beating!"
Old Mrs. Shepherd, her face swollen, could only stammer, "I…"
The grandmother sneered, not even bothering to look at her swollen face. She continued, her voice filled with sorrow, "My family saved you without expecting anything in return. We were planning to send you back to your home, the very place I live in now, Perkins Creek."
