The Billionaire Ex-Wife and the Beggar He Became novel Chapter 360

"Is this what college-educated women do? Know that a man has a pregnant wife and pretend you don't?"

"You two, a pair of vile creatures who ruined my life, you came to my home to apologize. So when I tell you to kneel, is that not what you deserve?"

By the time Helga finished, she was sobbing uncontrollably, her heart shattered.

She was a diligent old woman. In her youth, she had been praised as a flower of the village. She hadn't always been so bitter, so difficult. But her life had been one of thankless service, caring for another's parents and sister, only to be left barren and endlessly insulted by the woman who had stolen her husband.

She was called a country bumpkin.

She was called barren.

She was called a lunatic.

She was called an old beggar.

Every time she stood outside the Shepherd Manor with her garbage bags, watching Old Mr. Shepherd with his son, two grandsons, and granddaughter, a picture of domestic bliss, she would cry until her eyes bled.

She regretted saving him. To watch him grow more and more successful using the skills her family had taught him, while she was left to beg for scraps and endure the bullying of the villagers for being a lonely old woman—how could she not be filled with hatred?

"You old coward, do you admit it? If you don't, I will take a knife and cut you and your old mistress half to death. I won't kill you. I'll make you suffer until you die!" Helga's face was a mask of pure hatred as she looked at Old Mr. Shepherd.

Old Mr. Shepherd prostrated himself on the floor, banging his head. "Helga, I was wrong. Not a day has gone by that I haven't been haunted by nightmares."

"You still remember my name?" Helga asked through her tears.

"Leave you alone?" Helga looked confused. "When have I ever troubled the Shepherd family? What am I supposed to be leaving you alone from?"

"You had Prescott bankrupt our family, to the point where we will all be sleeping on the streets tonight, all because you wanted an apology! Now that my husband and I have apologized, you can't take our house away, can you? You can't go back on your word!" Old Mrs. Shepherd pleaded, her eyes wide.

"From the moment you walked in this door, I never once said that if you knelt to me, I would let you keep your house! You old fool, you're so cunning. You think you can get a house just by kneeling to me?" Helga spat in Old Mrs. Shepherd's face.

Old Mrs. Shepherd felt the ultimate humiliation. An old woman in her seventies or eighties, she began to wail, a truly ugly sound. "Wuwuwu, Yves Prescott took our house! He said he was doing it to get revenge for you, that he wanted us to come and apologize to you!"

"If Yves Prescott took your house, then go and ask Yves Prescott for it back. Why are you asking a lonely old woman like me?" Helga kicked her again for good measure.

Old Mrs. Shepherd and Old Mr. Shepherd were left completely stunned.
