On the other end of the line, Xander let out a sigh of disappointment. For some reason, he had hoped that Frank and Winona knew each other, that the billions were meant for her. He often scolded himself for it. *Xander, you can't let your feelings for Winona cloud your judgment. That wouldn't be fair to Felicity.*
After a moment, he said, "It's nothing, Nona. Frank keeps apologizing to you in his delirium, so I thought you might have known each other before."
"We've never met."
"I understand."
He paused, then changed the subject. "Nona, with the new year just around the corner, what are your plans? You, your grandmother, your sister, and Zane. I was thinking, maybe I could join your family for the celebration? What do you think?"
Winona was surprised. "Dr. McCarthy, these past few days… the Shepherd family has been homeless, unable to even check into a hotel. Aren't you… looking after them?"
Xander chuckled softly. "Yves Prescott is the one who made them homeless. But I'm not their only friend. The Chamberlain family, the Warren family—they can all help. Besides, Julian is back from Port City now. The first thing he'll probably do is marry Felicity. Once they're married, I'm sure Julian can handle a little problem like this…"
He paused again before continuing, "Nona, I know your grandmother wants to see the Shepherd family ruined, but with Julian backing them, I'm afraid seeing them bounce back unscathed might be painful for you and her."
Winona smiled faintly. "Thank you for your concern, Dr. McCarthy, but I'm fine. The Nicholson family taking in the Shepherds is to be expected. My grandmother and I can handle it. Thank you for your kindness."
"So, can I join you for the new year celebration?" Xander asked again.
"Yes, of course," Winona agreed.
