Mike paced back and forth, irritation carved plainly across his face. When he turned to Jasmine — sitting on the only invaluable chair the bank hadn’t collected — his face reddened with fury. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
He marched toward her, grabbed her by the shoulders, and forced her to her feet.
"Jasmine!" he roared, snapping her out of whatever thoughts she was drowning in. "Snap out of it!"
Jasmine’s eyes shook as she searched his angry face.
"Are you not hearing me?!" he growled, his grip tightening. "This is not the time to sulk like this! If we don’t do something, losing this place will be the least of our worries!"
Grinding his teeth, Mike hissed, "We sacrificed a lot just to get here, Jasmine. I’m not losing any of it because of that damn Lawrence. And I swear to God, I will not go back to that jail because of him."
"..." Jasmine stared at him, searching his expression for even the tiniest hint that he was drowning in regret or guilt the same way she was. But Mike showed nothing.
She swallowed hard. "Mike... after everything, this is what you’re still focused on?"
"What?" His face twisted. "What do you expect from me?"
"Loren swapped our children. And not only did I end up raising hers, I hurt my own." Tears gathered in her eyes. "And to make it worse, both Melissa and Lola already know."
"And so?" Mike winced, restraining himself from snapping. "Lola and Melissa know — so what?"
"Mike, don’t you care about your child?" Jasmine slapped his hands away. "That was your child — ours! How could you say that?!"
"She’s happy! She married a rich man — what else do you want from me? Cry?" he barked, his voice echoing through the almost-empty residence. He ruffled his hair in frustration. "Jasmine, what do you want me to do?"
"Sure, Lola was our child and we didn’t get to raise her — that’s... bitch!" he exclaimed, fumbling in his anger. "But we can’t turn back time! Even if we cry a river, Lola will never forgive us!"
Jasmine’s bitterness tightened her chest. Lola had made that clear. It was why she was falling apart. She had spent years hating Lola, only to learn the truth through a DNA test. Suddenly, so many things made sense.
Things she had never allowed herself to admit.
"But most importantly," Mike continued, "even if she doesn’t want us in her life, that’s one less mouth to feed." His twisted logic spilled out without shame. "Besides, what’s there to worry about? Our daughter married a rich man! She took after you. Actually, better than you!"
His remarks — whether a joke or just his warped thinking — made Jasmine glare. But Mike didn’t back down.
"Jasmine." He clasped her shoulders again. "I’m sorry for Lola. I am. But I’d be even more sorry if we let that Lawrence Young live."
Jasmine scoffed. "Lawrence is still in a coma—"
"But he’ll wake up," Mike snapped. "And when he does, he’s going to run that big mouth of his. Jasmine, you know your husband. Once he talks, both of us will end up behind bars."
Silence fell thickly between them.
Jasmine pressed her lips together, conflict flickering in her eyes.
"If Lola died, I would’ve grieved," Mike said bluntly. "But that girl is living the life now. I researched the Bennets — they’re loaded. Your daughter is in safe hands. So right now, we worry about ourselves."
He shook her shoulders gently, but his voice sharpened. "Do you understand?"
