The entrapment operation caused quite a commotion as both Jasmine and Mike struggled wildly. They screamed, and Jasmine even pretended she was going to faint. But none of the arresting officers or detectives at the scene fell for any of it.
In the end, the duo was taken into custody for questioning.
As for Melissa, she was not taken to the station. Instead, she remained in the hospital. They moved her to a separate room in the ward, and the detective told her everything.
"What?" she breathed out, her shoulders sagging as she stared blankly at the officer across from her. "What are you saying? My dad didn’t try to take his own life?"
The detective shook his head with a heavy sigh.
"We received a tip that your father’s case might not be self-harm, but attempted murder. So we’ve been investigating quietly and found several inconsistencies in Mike and your mother’s stories."
"We’ve been monitoring their activity, especially Mike," the detective continued. "When we discovered he purchased a strong drug he had no medical need for, we kept an eye on him. That’s why we staged this entrapment operation to catch him in the act—"
Before he could finish, Melissa slammed her hands on the table.
"What about my dad?" she cried, growing pale. Her whole body shook, as if her mind couldn’t register everything at once. "I need to see my dad!"
But she froze when the detective spoke again.
"Fortunately, we swapped the drug with saline, so your father will be fine, Miss Melissa." He watched her turn toward him, eyes shaking and full of tears. He gestured for her to sit. "Please calm down. Everything is under control."
"I want to see him first," she insisted.
"Yes, of course," he replied gently. "But for now, I’ll need you to answer my questions." Seeing the hesitation on her face, he added, "Miss Melissa, I’m not detaining you. You may leave anytime. However, I need your statement. Otherwise, it may become troublesome for you, because Mike tried to implicate you."
"What?"
"He left the evidence in your purse," he revealed directly. "Even though we know—and I believe you know—you had nothing to do with this, it’s best to remove yourself from suspicion. So please, cooperate."
Melissa stared blankly at the detective, her complexion drained of color. She had already been struggling to process everything he’d said, but now... she felt her entire being collapse inward. She slumped back into her chair, her neck tightening as breathing suddenly felt like a luxury.
She felt suffocated.
Hearing that Jasmine and Mike had possibly tried to kill Lawrence was already too much. This day had been long and emotionally draining. She had no more room in her mind to absorb anything else. But now the detective was telling her that Jasmine and Mike—the people who raised her, one as her mother, one as her second father—had planned to frame her for Lawrence’s murder?
They might hate each other, but she never imagined they hated her this much.
But then again, Jasmine and Mike had maltreated Lola since childhood. What made her think they wouldn’t do the same to her, especially now that they knew she was Loren’s daughter?
"..." Melissa’s pale lips opened and closed soundlessly. She stared at the detective, seeing his mouth move, yet hearing nothing.
She felt like her entire world was spinning, and before she knew it, her eyes rolled back, and she fainted from the overwhelming shock.

Meanwhile, Jasmine and Mike were kept in separate interrogation rooms.
Mike, having experienced being locked up before, remained calm. He rested his cuffed wrist on the table, his expression dark as he stared sharply at the door. He already knew the process. He knew exactly what to do.
Once that door opened, he would say only one thing:
As long as Jasmine stays quiet, we might still have a chance.
