**Shadows Beneath the Silent Moon**
**Chapter 74**
“What’s happening?” Bryan exclaimed, disbelief lacing his voice as he struggled to grasp the gravity of the scene unfolding before him. His heart raced, pounding against his chest as he tried to process the chaos.
“Get the hell out of the way!” Thane barked, his voice sharp and commanding, slicing through the tension like a knife. Without a moment’s hesitation, Bryan stepped aside, instinctively sensing the urgency that radiated from Thane. In a flurry of movement, Thane’s hands glided over Alessa’s arm, searching for the precise spot to deliver the injection that might pull her back from the brink of darkness.
“Take the kids out,” Thane ordered Bryan, his focus unwavering, eyes locked on Alessa’s pale face.
“Aiden, Aria, come on,” Bryan urged, casting a quick glance back at the twins. Their wide, anxious eyes reflected the uncertainty that filled the air as they climbed off the bed.
He gently grasped their small hands, leading them away from the room where their mother lay vulnerable and still. Together, they made their way down the dimly-lit hallway, shadows flickering around them.
“Is she okay?” Aria’s voice trembled with concern, her eyes glistening with unshed tears as she looked up at Bryan, searching for reassurance.
“Yes, she is. She will be fine. Let’s just wait downstairs,” he replied, attempting to infuse his voice with a calmness he didn’t fully feel as they descended the staircase together.
Once they reached the living room, Bryan settled onto the couch, pulling the twins close to him. He did his best to distract them from the worry that hung heavily in the air, like a dark cloud ready to burst.
Ten minutes stretched on, each tick of the clock echoing like a drumbeat in Bryan’s ears. He could feel the weight of Thane’s anxiety from the other room, the tension palpable. Thane’s gaze flicked toward Alessa, who still lay unconscious, and a sigh escaped his lips; she should have regained consciousness by now.
Yet, as if in response to his silent plea, Alessa began to stir. Her eyelids fluttered open slowly, and when her gaze met Thane’s, he instinctively moved closer, a protective instinct surging within him.
“Are you okay?” he asked softly, concern etched deeply into his features.
“How long was I out?” Alessa inquired, her voice barely above a whisper as she sat up, running her fingers through her tousled hair, as if trying to shake off the remnants of unconsciousness.
“Your kids found you. Maybe hours,” Thane replied, his voice steady but tinged with worry that he couldn’t quite mask.
“I heard them before I passed out,” she admitted, her voice fragile, revealing the vulnerability beneath her strength.
“They tried to keep your temperature down,” Thane chuckled lightly, gesturing to the bowl of cool water and towel beside her. “They did their best.”
“Yeah, I heard that. I taught Aiden that,” she said with a faint smile, though the sadness in her eyes hinted at the weight of memories that washed over her.
Thane could sense the burden of her thoughts. “They don’t remember anything; you don’t have to worry about that,” he reassured her, almost as if he could read her mind. Alessa turned to him, her eyes searching his for the comfort she desperately needed.
He nodded at her, offering a warm smile, and she returned it, grateful for the bond they had forged through their shared trials. Thane was not merely a guard; he had become a steadfast ally, a friend who had stood by her side when the world felt dark and unforgiving.
“Where are they?” Alessa asked, her gaze darting around the room, desperate to locate her children.
“Downstairs in the living room,” Thane replied, noting the widening of her eyes as realization dawned.
“What?” she exclaimed, surprise and anxiety flooding her expression.
“He called you, and they picked up the call. They told him you were sick, and he rushed down here,” Thane explained, observing her reaction closely, aware of the myriad emotions crossing her face.
“Damn it,” she cursed under her breath, swinging her legs over the side of the bed and rising to her feet in a flurry of motion. Without a moment’s pause, she dashed out of her room and flew down the stairs.
As she entered the living room, she paused, taking in the sight before her. Bryan sat on the couch, the twins nestled beside him; Aria had her head resting on his leg, while he gently ran his fingers through her hair. Aiden was perched next to him, his face a mask of concern.
“Mum!” Aiden called out, his eyes lighting up as he rushed toward her, with Aria following closely behind. They both enveloped her in a tight embrace, and Alessa bent down to meet them at their level.
“What happened? We were so worried! You weren’t talking and…” Aiden’s voice was filled with urgency as he pulled back slightly to look at her, his brow furrowed with concern.
