“Mom, who was that?”
Jamie and Mary, who were just coming downstairs, had also vaguely heard Lily’s name.
Mary’s voice trembled with excitement. “Is that news about Lily?”
Thinking about how eighteen days had passed since the accident, she knew that even if there was news, it was unlikely to be good. Her voice couldn’t help but fill with heartache. “Lily… she…”
“Don’t say such unlucky things!” Zoey, guessing what Mary was about to say, interrupted her, her face beaming.
“Lily is alive! Grace just called me. She said Lily is home! Not only is she fine, but the two babies in her belly are fine, too! Lily’s back, so James can finally stop suffering!”
“Dennis and I are going to the Luke manor to see Lily now. Do you want to come with us?”
When Mary heard Lily was really alive, she was so overjoyed she nearly tried to leap down the remaining five or six steps to the ground floor. Jamie, terrified, grabbed her just in time to keep her from falling.
“Be careful! Did you twist your ankle?”
Mary, whose mind was focused entirely on seeing Lily, ignored Jamie completely.
She hurried over to Zoey, linked arms with her, and beamed. “Lily’s back, of course I’m going!”
Mary was truly, deeply happy that Lily had returned safely. She and Nancy were incredibly close, more like sisters than just in–laws. Over time, their bond had only deepened. She had watched James grow up; in her heart, he was as much her son as her nephew. She had been at the seaside and had seen James’s devastated, zombie–like state. She had been terrified that if anything truly happened to Lily, James would do something foolish. Now that Lily was ba unharmed, she was overjoyed.
There was another reason for her joy.
Lily was the little girl her son had been searching for all this time.
After Lily’s accident, it was as if the life had drained out of her son. He was consumed by self- blame for choosing Elsa over Lily. Mary knew that even if Simon had chosen Lily, the kidnappers wouldn’t have let her go. But she was still furious about his choice. If Lily had really died, she would never have been able to face Nancy or James.
Now that Lily was alive, they still had a chance to make amends.

The idiot had been wrong, fooled by Elsa, calling her Lizzy. Now that he finally knew the truth, he was calling Lily Lizzy.
