The Day I Walked Away My Empire Began novel Chapter 281

“I don’t understand your request. Please ask Mr. Heath when he returns.”

Lucie just stared, her anger bubbling up so fast she felt sick.

“Fine. Then call Steven. Tell him to come back.”

“I’m sorry,” the robot replied, “I can only answer incoming calls. I can’t contact anyone outside.”

Lucie gritted her teeth. “So what’s the point of having you here?”

“I can make you food, clean the house, do your laundry, and even sing for you if you’d like…”

“Make me food?” Lucie let out a sharp, sarcastic laugh.

“Is he worried I’ll starve to death or something?”

“Yes,” the robot replied, as if that made perfect sense.

Lucie’s chest tightened. She wanted to scream, to throw something, but yelling at a robot felt ridiculous.

She grabbed the arm of the couch and pushed herself up, legs shaky as she shuffled to the front door.

It was a heavy security door—locked tight from the outside.

There was no opening it. Even if she somehow got a firefighter to break in, it probably wouldn’t budge.

She drifted over to the window out of habit.

The thick curtains were drawn so tight that only a sliver of daylight snuck through.

She pulled back a corner. Outside was a lush, green garden—so perfect it looked fake.

Farther out, she could just make out the top of a tall wall, and she was pretty sure there were cameras on it.

“Wow. What a fancy cage. He must have planned this for a while, huh?”

She muttered under her breath and let the curtain fall, shutting out the world again.

Her stomach growled at the worst possible time.

Her body felt weak, a familiar dizziness from low blood sugar pressing in on her. She had no choice but to give in for now.

She turned around, sighing. “Fine. Get me something to eat.”

“Of course. Please wait.” The robot turned and headed toward the kitchen, its metal footsteps echoing through the quiet house.

Lucie sank back onto the couch, her eyes drifting around the living room. Expensive paintings hung on the walls. Weird, modern sculptures filled the corners. Everything screamed money, but it all felt cold and empty.

This was so riduclous. This man hurt her in the harshest ways, but then locked her in this comfortable prison. What was he even trying to do?

Not long after, the robot came back, rolling in a cart.

There was a cup of milk, some toast and eggs.

“Your meal is ready, ma’am.”

Lucie wasn’t hungry at all, but she forced herself to take a few slow sips. The warm milk eased her stomach a little, but her nerves were still a mess.

“Would you like me to sing for you, ma’am?”

“No. That’s not necessary.”

Lucie put down her spoon and looked at the robot. “Do you know where Elio is right now?”

The robot shook its head. “I have no information on anyone named Elio.”

Lucie’s heart sank even lower.

Last night, Elio had told her to call him as soon as she got home.
