The following day.
Since I had just rented the apartment, I planned to buy some furniture later that evening.
As soon as I stepped outside, I saw Lucas’s car pull up right in front of me. I stopped in my tracks.
“Lucas, have you been keeping tabs on me?”
Lucas replied, “Statistically, 89% of people go out to buy furniture on the first day after moving. In summer, New York’s peak time for outings is around 7:30 p.m.”
“You’re really good at calculating?” I got into the car, teasing him playfully. “Can you guess what I’ll buy today?”
Lucas paused, thinking. “A sofa?”
I shook my head. “Not quite.”
“A plant stand?”
“Nope.” I smiled as I looked at the frustrated look on Lucas’s face. “It’s curtains! Curtains are the strongest tool to set the atmosphere of a home. The color and style of a room are largely determined by the curtains.”
I asked, “But I don’t have a particular favorite color. What about you?”
Lucas was stunned. “If I like it, will you like it too?”
I nodded. “Of course. Love the house, love the crow.”
Lucas’s gaze flickered, and he looked at me. The fiery red sunset reflected in his eyes, giving him a softness that didn’t quite belong to him.
I took a deep breath, about to speak.
Suddenly, Lucas’s phone rang, breaking the fragile silence.
I quickly snapped back to reality. “You should take the call.”
I turned my gaze toward the window, finally calming myself. But then I heard Lucas’s cold voice on the phone.

“Where are you?”
After all this time, it was the first time I had heard him speak like that.
I turned in surprise and saw Lucas’s face turned completely cold. “Send me the location.”
After hanging up, Lucas looked at me, his expression apologetic. “Sorry, I need to go
somewhere.”
My heart skipped a beat. “Can I know what’s going on?”
Lucas hesitated, then said, “I have a brother who owes money. I need to go to the club to pick him
up.”
An unfamiliar unease stirred in my chest. Something about this situation didn’t feel right.
“Let’s go together.”
Lucas frowned. “No, it’s a mess there.”
“I’m going with you.” I insisted firmly.
Lucas hesitated, but seeing I wasn’t backing down, he relented and started the car.
When we arrived at the club, there were already two people waiting outside. The moment I saw
one of them, I froze.
It was none other than Alexander’s assistant.
My blood ran cold.
The assistant glanced at me and signaled for the other man to take Lucas inside.
Lucas said, “My girlfriend is coming with me.”
The assistant replied, “Sorry, you can only go in alone.”
Lucas shot him a cold look, pressed his lips together, took my hand, and turned to walk away.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
Lucas walked straight toward the car. “The trouble is my brother’s doing. I won’t let you get
involved. I’m taking you back first.”

I watched his retreating figure, feeling as though nothing could harm me as long as he was
around.
An inexplicable pang of sorrow washed over me.
The trouble, though, was likely caused by me. After I was taken back, Lucas’s brother likely wouldn’t make it out of there today.
I paused. “I’ll be fine.”
Lucas turned back to look at me. I smiled and said, “Really, don’t you trust me?”
“In a lawful society, I won’t get into trouble. Don’t worry.”
I smiled and gently pushed Lucas toward the entrance. As I watched his figure disappear from my sight, my heart sank. I turned toward the assistant.
“Where is he?”
The assistant smiled. “Follow me.”
I followed him into a large private room. The room was empty, except for Alexander.
I tightened my grip on the doorknob, then entered, spotting a contract for a kept relationship on
the table.
My footsteps faltered. Then, I heard Alexander’s indifferent voice.
“Sign it, and come back to the U.K. with me.”
