Under the sunlight, Alexander’s gaze was as cold as the ice of a deep winter lake.
He stared at me tight, leaning in another man’s embrace, as though his heart had been completely
frozen.
After a long moment, he spoke coldly.
“Evelyn, you’re good.”
I pressed my lips together, watching as Alexander turned and got into the car. The door slammed shut with a heavy thud, followed by the roar of the engine as the car and Alexander disappeared into the distance.
Not a flicker of hesitation.
My heart lightened immediately, followed by a sudden surge of emotions I couldn’t control.
What Alexander despised most was seeing his possessions touched by others.
I knew that after today, he wouldn’t seek me out again. In a way, it felt like a relief.
I sighed deeply, lifting my head to meet Lucas’s cold gaze. The headache from earlier returned.
One person gone, and now I had another to appease.
I nudged his arm. “Are you angry?”
Lucas nodded, then paused before shaking his head. “Who is he?”
I froze, unsure how to explain Alexander. I didn’t want to revisit the past, but I also didn’t want to
hide the truth from Lucas.
I wanted to be with Lucas for the long haul, to marry him, but I couldn’t pretend the past didn’t
exist.
I fell silent for a moment, then whispered.
“Lucas, can you give me some time to prepare? Before we marry, I’ll tell you everything.”
After that, it would be up to Lucas to decide whether to stay or leave.
No matter what the outcome, I could accept it,
Lucas glanced at me. “If you tell me now, we could get married tomorrow.”
He pressed his lips together, his tone tinged with annoyance.
Seeing him pout, my heart softened unexpectedly. I couldn’t help but reach out and pinch Lucas‘
face in amusement.
“Which family does Lucas belong to that only gets jealous? I haven’t even asked, isn’t there something going on at home? Why did you suddenly appear? Did you really see the wedding dress? No way, you only ever look at traffic lights when driving.”
Lucas’s ears turned red as he brushed my hand away. “Nothing.”
“Really?” I eyed him suspiciously, then suddenly laughed. “Your family isn’t from the north, right? So why is your car going in this direction? Oh, you drove the wrong way, didn’t you?”
Lucas raised two fingers and pinched my mouth shut. “Alright, stop talking.”
“What’s wrong with talking? A math genius can’t find his way? Or is Lucas just a big fool?”
I pulled his hand away, looked at Lucas’s face, and my heart melted completely.
I cupped Lucas’s face gently, and whispered.
“Foolish Lucas, remember this: no matter what happened in the past, I love you now.
Lucas’s gaze flickered. He grasped my hand and nuzzled his head against my palm. “What about
in the future?”
A flutter surged in my heart. I rose on my tiptoes and brushed my lips against his.
“No matter what the future holds, I will only love you more.”
Lucas’s gaze darkened slightly, and he leaned down, deepening the kiss.
At the end of the narrow road, a black Rolls–Royce with gold trim pulled up at the roadside.
Alexander watched us kiss from a distance, his grip on the steering wheel tightening.
His assistant’s voice sounded crackled through the earpiece, “Mr. Whitmore, we’ve discovered that Miss Hartwell’s current boyfriend is Lucas Harris, the son of Professor Harris from Harvard.
