1 froze for a moment, instinctively wanting to step back, but tightening my grip on my bag, I forced myself to stand my ground.
I smiled and said, “Mr. Whitmore, long time no see.
Alexander’s jaw tightened as he stared deeply into my face.
“You’re impressive. You’ve kept me searching for you for three whole years.”
I replied, “Not as impressive as you.”
I gave a self–deprecating smile. I had thought I could escape Alexander’s gaze, but I hadn’t
expected that less than two hours after leaving the research lab, he would find me.
Perhaps I should be more grateful to the Aerospace Institute; at least it had sheltered me for three years, giving me enough time to focus on my studies.
Now that I’d rested enough, the troubles I had to deal with had finally caught up to me.
I looked at Alexander, suppressing the emotions that were surging within me, and said calmly, “Mr. Whitmore, what do you want with me?”
I thought perhaps it was because of my sudden departure three years ago that Alexander had decided to humble himself and think about what he could compensate me for.
He stepped forward, grabbing my wrist, his voice low. “Come back with me.”
I froze for a moment. “Mr. Whitmore, our contract has expired.”
Alexander replied, “For the past three years, you’ve only been on leave. The payment will be provided in full–one million a month, forty million for three years. How about it?”
I stared at him, biting my lip. “The contract is over. We no longer have any relationship.”
Alexander didn’t listen, continuing on his own. “Not enough? Fifty million.”
I took a deep breath and looked at him. I had never thought I’d encounter Alexander again.
I had thought countless times about how I would feel—whether it would be indifference or lingering affection—but standing in front of him now, I realized it was more about helplessness.

I closed my eyes and said, “Alexander, it’s over.”
His gaze darkened. “Whether it’s over or not, that’s not for you to decide.”
He stared at me steadily, his voice rough. “The past, I can pretend it never happened.”
“Evelyn, from now on, stay by my side.”
It wasn’t a question or a plea. Even with the emotions in his voice, it was still the same unapproachable, commanding tone, as if nothing had changed.
I looked into his dark eyes, and it felt as if a gust of wind had swept through my heart, creating ripples that quickly disappeared.
Alexander hadn’t changed at all, but I was no longer the person I used to be.
I pulled my wrist from his grip. “No, I won’t.”
“Evelyn,” Alexander’s voice was deep, his patience nearly gone. But he closed his eyes, forcing the
anger in his chest down once more.
He asked, his voice strained, “Why?”
I closed my eyes again. “Because…”
“Because she has a boyfriend.”
A cold voice interrupted from behind me. I turned around and saw Lucas had unexpectedly
returned.
He slowly walked up to me, coldly pulling my wrist from Alexander’s hand.
Then, he interlocked his fingers with mine, holding them at his side.
“I saw a wedding dress in the display window just now. It would look perfect on you. How about
wearing it when you get married?”
Lucas’s expression remained calm, but I could feel his grip tightening so hard it almost felt like
my hand might break.
I pursed my lips, and out of the corner of my eye, I saw Alexander’s hand, his fingers clenched so
tightly that the knuckles were turning pale.

I smiled and said, “Alright, let’s go try it on now.”
With that, I leaned into Lucas’s arm and, looking up at Alexander’s icy expression, I smiled.
“Mr. Whitmore, my boyfriend and I have something to attend to, so we’ll leave now.”
“If there’s a chance, we’ll definitely invite you to our wedding.”
