I felt a tightness in my chest and quickly found an excuse to step aside to answer the phone.
The moment I picked up, Alexander’s cold, commanding voice came through the receiver.
“Turn around.”
I froze for a moment, then looked behind me. There was no one. After a brief search, I looked up
and saw him standing by the railing on the second floor of the tea room.
From his elevated position, Alexander looked down at me, his tone indifferent. “Come up.”
I bit my lip, glancing at Lucas, who was sitting alone on a nearby bench. His figure was mostly obscured by the shadows of the trees, looking completely out of place among the lively crowd.
Or perhaps, he was out of place by design–he was here for me. How could I leave him behind?
In a soft voice, I said, “Tomorrow. I’ll come find you tomorrow. Is that okay?”
Alexander’s response was curt, “No.”
I hesitated for a moment, then switched back to my usual tone. “Mr. Whitmore, I promise I’ll come see you tomorrow, okay?”
Alexander lowered his gaze, watching the helpless expression on my face. He smirked slightly.
“No.”
“Evelyn, I want to see you now.”
This was the first time since I last saw him that I heard Alexander speak with such calm, almost amused undertones. For a moment, I felt like I was back in London, still his kept woman.
I closed my eyes. “I understand.”
After hanging up, I slowly walked to Lucas’s side, suppressing the bitterness in my chest, and smiled. “A friend suddenly returned to the country. I need to go pick her up. You can head back
first.”
Lucas responded, “I’ll go with you.”
“No, it’s fine.”

1 forced a smile. “I can go by myself. The airport is far, and you need to rest today. Don’t you have to go to the lab tomorrow morning?”
Lucas didn’t answer immediately. He lowered his gaze, looking at me.
In his gaze, I almost couldn’t control myself, gripping my hands tightly. “I really don’t need you to come. I can go alone. You should head back.”
Lucas pursed his lips, and for the first time, he refused me, almost stubbornly saying, “I’ll
accompany you.”
I bit my lip and swatted his hand away. “I said no! Lucas, why are you so annoying today?”
As soon as the words left my mouth, I froze, and so did Lucas.
After a long pause, he said softly, “Do you think I’m annoying?”
My chest tightened, and I almost cried. I held it in, saying nothing.
At that moment, Alexander called again. I silenced my phone, but it kept vibrating in my hand.
Lucas said, “You should go meet your friend.”
He smiled slightly at me, turned, and walked away.
I watched his back slowly fade into the crowd, took a long moment to calm down, then turned and
made my way upstairs.
When I reached the top, Alexander was waiting for me by the railing.
In the dim light, the orange–red glow of the molten metal fireworks illuminated his side profile. His gaze locked onto mine, and he said coldly, “You’ve been crying.”
I whispered, “No, I haven’t.”
His expression darkened slightly. “Come here.”
I obediently walked toward him, but the next moment, Alexander pulled me into his arms. His cold fingertips dug into my chin, his thumb brushing lightly beneath my eye.
“Evelyn, you are mine. Why cry for someone else?”
I bit my lip. “Mr. Whitmore, you’re so compassionate. Does that mean everyone you’ve been with

is yours?”
“Too bad,” he said, his tone turning even colder, “Vivienne isn’t yours, and neither am I.”
1 fixed my gaze on Alexander’s eyes.
“This is the first call. You have four more. After that, we’ll have no relationship at all.”
