Alexander didn’t respond. His gaze lingered on mine, heavy and unreadable.
Downstairs, the sparks from the fireworks danced in the air, the orange–red glow reflecting in my eyes, like a firestorm burning everything in its path with hatred.
It felt as though he could see my anger–as if he could tell how much I didn’t want to see him.
Alexander clenched his jaw, then released me.
“Mm, so I’ll make you come to me, trying not to waste the opportunities.”
A cold shiver ran down my spine. “What do you mean?”
I looked at him, but he had already turned away, his gaze now fixed on the lake.
The assistant approached. “Miss Hartwell, I’ll take you downstairs.”
I bit my lip, confused about why Alexander had called me up in the first place.
Was it because he wasn’t happy seeing me with Lucas?
I glanced at Alexander’s back. Ultimately, I didn’t ask anything, and turned to head downstairs.
After escorting me down, the assistant looked back at Alexander’s retreating figure and sighed.
“Mr. Whitmore, you should be kinder with your words. You could’ve just said that the view from upstairs was good, and that you wanted Miss Hartwell to come up to watch the fireworks.”
Alexander’s gaze stayed on the fireworks below. His lips were tight.
“Can you see anything from downstairs?”
The assistant replied, “It’s just a sea of heads and phones. You can’t see anything clearly.”
“Is that so?” Alexander said coldly.
He would rather see nothing at all than come upstairs. In Evelyn’s mind, it was never about what
she was watching, but about who was beside her.
And that person, it seemed, wasn’t him.
Alexander closed his eyes, his fingers tightening around the railing. After a long moment, he

spoke again.
“Have the tasks I assigned you been completed?”
“Everything went smoothly,” the assistant answered.
“Mm.”
Alexander lowered his eyelids, watching Evelyn, walking alone, heading back. His eyes turned
cold.
One day, she would come to him willingly.
After he had confronted Lucas that night, Lucas hadn’t contacted me for a few days.
I sighed, deciding to visit Lucas at the research institute that evening.
When Lucas saw me, he was somewhat surprised. “What brings you here?”
I still felt guilty about how I had left things with him, so I said softly, “That night, I was in a rush. I’m sorry.”
“Is that all?” Lucas chuckled lightly. “I thought you missed me.”
I looked up at him. “Aren’t you angry?”
“No,” Lucas said. “I’ve just been a bit busy.”
“You’ve been busy? Do you need help?”
I smiled at him, but just as I said that, Lucas’s phone rang.
He glanced at the screen, his expression changed slightly, and he walked away to take the call.
From the distance, I could vaguely hear them discussing materials.
I watched the furrow in Lucas’s brow deepen and suddenly thought back to what Alexander had
told me.
“I’m waiting for you to come to me.‘
A cold unease washed over me. I knew then that Alexander would make a move against Lucas.
I should have known better that night. Why did I speak so harshly to Alexander? What good came

from angering him?
I took a deep breath, looking at Lucas, and reassured him.
“It’s fine. It’s probably just a holdup. It’ll be resolved in a few days.”
Lucas pursed his lips. “Was it him?”
I froze. Then, Lucas added, “You said it’ll be fine in a few days. Does that mean you’re going to
find him?”
I fell silent, and Lucas took a deep breath, reaching out to grip my shoulder. He looked down at me, his eyes filled with determination.
For the first time, he spoke in a voice full of helplessness.
“I’ll handle this.”
“Evelyn, don’t go looking for him.”
I suddenly felt choked up. Lucas pulled me into his embrace, holding my arm tightly, his tone
laced with unease.
“Evelyn, no matter what happens, don’t go looking for him.”
