The Day My Contract Ended I Married Another Man novel Chapter 21

Chapter 21

I stood there, resting against Lucas, feeling his heart racing against mine.

This was the first time he had spoken to me with such genuine sincerity.

In my mind, he had always been the person who gave me his coat on a rainy night, who quietly stood by my side when I needed him most, never asking asked anything of me.

Lucas seemed to live in a vacuum, with only his academics and research on his mind.

Later, there was me, and with me came all the worldly worries and anxieties.

He should have had a smooth, worryfree life.

My heart ached with the weight of it all.

I gently hugged Lucas, Okay.

Lucas’s anxious heartbeat gradually calmed, and he held me tighter, his fingers threading through my hair.

I don’t want you to see him.

I replied, Okay.

For the first time, I found myself lying to Lucas.

Alexander didn’t call me. That evening, I found myself standing outside the Whitmore Group

building.

As if he knew I was coming, the receptionist led me to the reception room on the first floor.

Outside the floortoceiling windows, the sky was overcast, and light rain began to fall.

I sat on the couch, my gaze fixed on the tea that had gone cold. Two hours passed before the door to the reception room slowly opened.

I looked up to see Alexander standing at the door, his jetblack hair, indifferent gaze, and a faint

smirk playing at his lips.

In the restaurant, the dim rain outside dripped slowly on the windows.

The indoor lighting was soft and warm, and French cuisine was served on the table, leaving only Alexander and me there.

I looked at the table, where a Filet Mignon with Merlot lay waiting.

In an instant, time seemed to rewind to three years ago, back in that small flat in London. I sat at the dining table, and I could always see Alexander’s tall figure in the kitchen.

The sound of the rain outside was noisy, but when I silently watched Alexander, everything else disappeared.

The atmosphere felt warm, yet tinged with artificiality.

I gently inhaled, pulling myself away from the memories. Alexander.

He interrupted me softly, Try it.

His voice was light, but there was an underlying pressure that made it feel like an obligation.

If I didn’t do what he liked, nothing would be up for discussion.

I remained silent for a moment, picked up the fork, cut a piece of steak, and placed it in my mouth.

It tasted exactly the same as before.

Yet, it was different from any restaurant steak.

It was the lemon juice. Three years ago, I used to add lemon juice to my steak.

Alexander said, Seems like your taste hasn’t changed.

I slowly chewed, putting down the knife and fork. A person’s tastes don’t change easily.

Alexander watched me, and my smile remained faint. But I never liked steak. No matter how many flavors you change, I’ll never like it.

His gaze deepened, and he slowly put down his knife and fork, wiping his hands with a napkin.

You’re here because of him, and you don’t have anything nice to say?

I remained silent for a moment, then said, Alexander, this is our issue. It shouldn’t involve other people.

Other people? He said casually, Does your boyfriend count as other people?

I replied, Doesn’t he?

I looked into Alexander’s eyes, softening my tone.

Alexander, if you have an issue with me, leave him out of it. I don’t want to owe him.

Alexander sensed the plea in my words. After a few hard confrontations with him, I had switched tactics this time, carefully scheming.

Scheming for Lucas.

Suddenly, he laughed, his voice cold. I can leave him alone.

His eyes lightly traced my face, slowly landing on mine, his tone indifferent.

“Well then, what can you offer me in exchange?
