New York City, the Fourth Aerospace Research Institute.
The academician frowned deeply. “Due to interference from the satellite’s magnetic field, the space station’s orbit has slightly shifted. We need to address this immediately.”
Everyone’s face grew serious, and they immediately began immersing themselves in calculations.
I lowered my head, my hand about to touch the screen when the academician suddenly tapped my
shoulder.
“Come with me.‘”
I froze for a moment before following the academician out of the lab. I had been here for almost a week, and the academician had been very kind to me, rarely calling me out alone. I couldn’t help
but feel a bit nervous.
“Did I do something wrong?”
The academician paused, then turned and looked at me, smiling. “You’ve done great. It’s just that
today, we have a new member joining. Since you’re both graduates from the UK, I want you to
welcome him. You’re just too nervous.”
I breathed a sigh of relief, lowering my head to hide the sweat gathering in my palms.
This was a rare opportunity, and I wanted to make the most of it, which made me anxious.
“I just want to do a little better.”
The members here were all masters and PhDs with multiple degrees. My academic background
was already at the bottom here, and if I didn’t try harder, I’d be left behind.
The academician patted my shoulder. “You’re already nervous just meeting them? What will you do when you meet the new member? He’s a once–in–a–century genius in the math department. He completed two bachelor’s degrees at twelve and started his PhD at sixteen. Don’t let his youth fool you, he already holds two PhDs. A genius like him joining the same team as you shows that you’re not any less than them.”
“Now, you’ve got me thinking I’m actually pretty impressive,” I chuckled.
The academician waved behind me. “He’s here.”

I turned curiously, and saw a tall figure standing by the door. When he heard the noise, he turned to face me, his clean and handsome face meeting my gaze gently.
It was a cleat, sunny day in New York City, but when our eyes met, I suddenly felt transported
back to that rainy night in London. On the cold bus, a young man had taken off his coat and draped
it over me. By the time I turned back, he had already disappeared into the rain.
My heart skipped a beat. “It’s you.”
The man asked, “You remember?”
I smiled. “You’re not someone who’s easily forgotten.”
Even though it was just a fleeting glance, his unique, subtle air of detachment was firmly etched
in my memory.
I walked over, extending my hand to him. “Thank you again for that day, and welcome to our team. My name is Evelyn.”
The man looked down at my hand, then reached out to gently shake it. His voice, like him, was
cool and composed.
“Lucas.”
London, Apartment
Alexander stood by the floor–to–ceiling windows, his expression icy.
“You’re telling me that, despite using all the Whitmore family’s resources, you can’t find
Evelyn?”
The assistant didn’t dare look up, wiping the cold sweat from his forehead. “I’ve searched through the best hackers, both domestic and international, but we can’t break that firewall. It’s likely a national–level security measure, so…

He nervously glanced at Alexander, whose face was partially obscured by the dim light of the study. The air around him seemed to chill several degrees, his cold aura hanging in the room.
The assistant fell silent. After a long pause, he heard Alexander’s voice, low and commanding.
“Get out.”

The assistant quickly exited the room, and the moment the door closed, a loud crash echoed from within. His heart skipped a beat as he rushed downstairs.
Inside, the room was in disarray, with items thrown violently to the floor, scattered across everywhere.
Alexander, holding back his anger, placed his hands on the desk. He looked out at the silent night through the window, his emotions crashing like waves, each one threatening to submerge his
reason.
At that moment, it felt like something had completely slipped beyond his control.
