The doctor seemed to remember that Latisha couldn't speak, and her tone softened slightly. “Where is your husband? Have you notified him?”
Latisha shook her head.
“You need to call him. This is serious. How can he not take this seriously? He clearly has no regard for your health!”
Latisha froze, then quickly typed on her phone: [He’s away on a business trip. He can’t come.]
The doctor eyed her suspiciously for a moment before sighing. “You need to be careful. Try to communicate with your husband. If you can’t, you can seek legal help. You can’t just let him do whatever he wants.”
“I’m going to prescribe you some medication, and you need to continue the IV treatments for at least five more days. You have to come back, do you hear me?”
By the time the doctor finished, Latisha felt as if she wanted to sink into the floor. She took the prescriptions and fled the hospital.
As she was leaving the inpatient building, she ran right into Clifford. Her hand instinctively tightened around the bag of medicine. He didn’t seem to see her; his full attention was on Yesenia, who was leaning on a crutch, her body pressed against his as she complained.
“I must have the worst luck. I’ve twisted the same ankle twice now. I was supposed to sign my contract today. That mute girl is my curse!”
“If you’re injured, you should keep your mouth shut,” Clifford said. Though his words were harsh, his expression was neutral. It seemed like their usual way of bickering.
Yesenia shot him a glare. “Oh, so now you feel sorry for her? You rotten man, my foot is this swollen, and you’re still telling me off.”
“You still have the energy to argue, so it can’t be that serious.”
“I can’t walk anymore. Carry me to the car,” she said irritably.
Without a word, Clifford bent down, lifted her into his arms, and carried her to the parking lot.
...
By now, the workday was over. Instead of going back to the office, Latisha hailed a cab and went straight back to the villa. As she got out of the car, she saw Preston pacing in front of the gate.
When he saw her, he rushed over. “Mrs. Lambert, it’s been a whole day. Don’t tell me you still haven’t come up with the five hundred thousand.”
