His proposal was simple: install a camera that would upload its footage to the cloud. Latisha wouldn’t have to watch it, but if something happened, they could access the recordings.
Preston, still fuming over the lost money, was incensed at the idea of a camera in his home and refused outright.
“No camera, then we go to court,” Zadok stated plainly. “This matter will be resolved today, one way or another.”
“You…” Preston sputtered, glaring at Zadok. “What kind of lawyer are you? Spying on us with a camera? Don’t you know that’s illegal?”
“As I said, we will not be viewing the footage,” Zadok explained patiently. “The cloud upload is merely to prevent you from deleting it. We won’t have access unless we file a complaint and go through the police. Do you understand?”
Preston was speechless. He had no counterargument. Zadok had made the terms clear: install the camera or go to court. Those were the only options.
“Fine! You win! Do whatever the hell you want!” Preston threw himself onto the sofa, too angry to argue anymore. What chance did he have against a lawyer?
“Then it’s settled. If you’re unwilling to pay, we will cover the cost of the camera.”
“Whatever. Just get it done and get out of my sight. What a damn unlucky day,” Preston muttered, his face a mask of fury.
Zadok nodded and consulted with Latisha, who agreed to pay for the camera.
With that decided, a small weight lifted from Latisha’s shoulders. She bid a reluctant farewell to Mrs. Dashiell and left the apartment with Zadok. Their next stop was to buy the camera.
Latisha gave Zadok a grateful look and typed “Thank you” on her phone.
He smiled. “You’re welcome. I’m glad I could help resolve this. However, Ms. Judd, you are aware that I bill by the hour, aren’t you?”
Latisha froze. They hadn’t discussed his fee. She hesitantly typed: [How much?]
“Two thousand dollars an hour,” Zadok replied with a pleasant smile.
She asked: [Is that billable?]
Zadok laughed. “Haha… no. Consider it a complimentary service.”
Latisha breathed a sigh of relief and nodded. It would be better to have him there when they installed the camera, in case Preston tried to back out.
“Get in,” Zadok said, holding the car door open for her.
Latisha climbed in, and they drove away from the complex toward an electronics store.
Neither of them noticed the car parked on the side of the road, or the pair of cold eyes watching them go.
“Follow them.”
