Lennon’s face cycled through shades of red and white.
Yesenia tightened her grip on Clifford’s arm and whispered, “Honey, let’s just go. It’s not a big deal.”
She was terrified that Mortimer would return and reveal that there had been a woman in the car. She knew Clifford would cover for her, but the guilt was eating at her. Her position was tenuous at best, and she hated being seen with Latisha in public.
Clifford glanced at Yesenia. “You go ahead. I’m not driving you back.”
She clung to him instinctively. “No, I want you to take me home.”
“Be good, hmm?” Clifford’s voice was gentle, but his eyes held a clear warning.
Yesenia bit her lip, annoyed but not ready to give up. “Then I’ll wait here with you.”
“Suit yourself.” Clifford paid her no further mind. He wasn’t going to wait for Mortimer anyway. He opened the car door and got in.
Yesenia immediately followed, sliding into the passenger seat.
Clifford frowned at her.
Ignoring him, Yesenia fastened her seatbelt and offered a bright smile. “It’s fine. You don’t have to drive me home. I’ll just go with you.”
She knew exactly where he was going, and there was no way she was letting him be alone with Latisha.
“Are you sure you want to come with me?” Clifford asked.
Yesenia nodded. “Of course. Is there a reason I can’t? I haven’t seen you in days. What’s wrong with spending a little more time with you?”
Clifford studied her for a moment before turning away and starting the car.
Ignoring the stares of onlookers, Lennon chased after his son with the belt. It was a chaotic scene, but not an unfamiliar one at the hotel. Mortimer’s rebellious nature was well-known, and Lennon, who had once cared about his reputation, had long since given up. What was a little public humiliation when his son was driving him to an early grave?
The little bastard had dared to break into Clifford Lambert’s car and steal his dog! Lennon was past the point of reason; he wanted to strangle him on the spot.
Mortimer dodged and weaved until he had no choice but to sprint back to his own car.
“Sean, go!”
Sean yelped, slammed his foot on the gas, and the car shot forward like an arrow, snapping the parking gate arm as it sped away.
Lennon clutched his chest, gasping for breath. He felt a heart attack coming on and nearly collapsed before someone steadied him.
“Man, where are we going now?” Sean asked, glancing back. “You’re definitely getting your allowance frozen this time.”
