The Day Silence Spoke novel Chapter 189

Latisha flinched from the cold fury emanating from him and took an involuntary step back.

Clifford seized her wrist, his grip like iron, but managed to restrain himself from making a scene. “We’re leaving.”

She stumbled behind him as he stalked away, his pace so fast she nearly fell several times. He threw her into the car, and the door slammed shut with a deafening boom before she had a chance to steady herself. He didn't say a word as he drove back to the villa.

When they arrived, he yanked her door open and dragged her out. She struggled to keep up as he pulled her along, his grip bruisingly tight. She tried to pull away, but he suddenly flung her from him.

Latisha pitched forward, her knees slamming into the hard ground with a sickening impact. Pain exploded behind her eyes. She gasped, her hands braced on the ground, tears streaming down her face. Before she could even process the pain, he grabbed her by the collar and hauled her to her feet.

Latisha looked up into the face of a man consumed by rage.

Clifford stared down at her, a cold smile twisting his lips. “Latisha, have I been too lenient with you? Is that why you treat my words like they’re nothing?”

She sensed the killing intent in his voice and shrank back, shaking her head violently. She raised her hands to sign, but before she could form a single word, he threw her back to the ground.

“Don’t bother!”

Latisha froze.

Clifford pinned her hands, his grip so tight she thought her bones would shatter. “What’s the point? You ignore every word I say. Since you can’t speak, it seems these hands of yours are redundant. How would you like to be a true mute?”

Clifford mercilessly pried her fingers away and turned to leave.

Latisha lunged forward, wrapping her arms around his legs, refusing to let him go. He looked down at her, his face a cold mask.

Tears streamed down her face as she shook her head. She hated her silence, hated that she couldn't even form the simplest plea. Her frantic, silent gestures were just a pathetic, powerless display.

Latisha clung to his leg, ignoring the throbbing pain in her knees as she slowly pulled herself up. She wrapped her arms around his waist and pressed her face against his chest, trying to calm the storm within him.

Clifford stood perfectly still, but he closed his eyes and took a deep, shuddering breath.
