Latisha pretended not to hear her. It was true, after all. She knew nothing. Besides the most basic functions, she was lost on a computer, and she’d only learned how to use the printer after starting here. Given his position, Ziven couldn't exactly come over and teach her, and the manager, Selah Madison, had never assigned anyone to train her. What else could she do but sit at her desk?
Just then, Selah walked into the office. She tapped on Rosalie’s desk, then called out, “Latisha. You two, come with me.”
Latisha stood up and followed Rosalie into the manager's office at the back.
“Ms. Madison, what can we do for you?” Rosalie asked nervously, wondering if Selah had overheard her snide remarks.
Selah sat back in her chair, smiling at them. “Don’t be nervous, it’s nothing serious.” She turned to Latisha. “Latisha, you’ve been here for a while now. You’re one of my employees, and I can’t have you doing nothing but menial tasks. It doesn’t look good.”
Latisha nodded in understanding.
“So,” Selah continued, “Rosalie, I’d like you to train her. Teach her how to use our company’s internal systems, some of the document templates, presentation software… you’re quite proficient with all of that, aren’t you?”
Rosalie’s face fell. Why did she have to train this mute? She didn’t just know nothing, she couldn’t even speak. She’d rather train an intern.
“Rosalie, do you have an objection? It’s fine, you can say so. If you’re not willing, I can find someone else.”
Rosalie forced a smile. “Of course not! I’d be happy to. Whatever you ask, Ms. Madison.” She shot a look at Latisha. “Don’t you worry, I’ll take good care of her. In fact, since she can’t talk, why don’t we just have her handle all the paperwork from now on? How does that sound?”
Selah glanced at Latisha, then nodded in agreement. “I think that’s a good idea. Latisha can’t communicate with clients anyway. From now on, you’ll be in charge of documentation. Latisha, you’ll need to learn everything you can from Rosalie.”
She opened the manual and began to read, page by careful page.
In his office, Clifford received a text from Renata, asking for instructions on how to transfer the funds. He glanced at it and ignored it.
Santino knocked and entered, striding purposefully to Clifford’s desk. “Clifford,” he said gravely, “I have some bad news.”
“What is it?”
Santino paused. “We can’t contain the news about the investment failure any longer. The media is all over it. The moment the market opened this morning, our stock went into a nosedive.”
