The Day Silence Spoke novel Chapter 221

Yesenia froze, sitting motionless as she stared at him with a complex mix of emotions.

“Yesenia, I can’t marry you.”

There it was again. Every time he said those words, it felt like a knife twisting in her heart. She bit her lip, her nose tingling as tears threatened to spill.

Clifford added, “You need to value yourself more.”

Yesenia remained silent. How ridiculous. A man like him telling her to value herself? Who would believe such a thing? It was just another excuse.

“Clifford, do you love me?”

“What is love?”

“You’re the one I should be asking. You’re so good to me, you give me everything I ask for. You even drove two hours just to pick me up because I was throwing a fit,” she said, staring at him, trying to decipher the expression on his face. “Tell me, isn’t that love?”

But it was no use. The car was too dark, and the fleeting streetlights that swept across his profile only illuminated the same old indifference. It was the kind of coldness you could feel even when he was smiling at you, a suffocating and helpless chill that only those closest to him could truly perceive.

Clifford didn’t answer, his focus solely on the road ahead.

“You go silent every time I ask you this,” Yesenia sniffled, her makeup starting to run as she cried.

Just as she was about to wipe her eyes with her sleeve, a long, slender hand offered her a tissue.

She snatched it petulantly and dabbed at her face.

She was done asking. It was just pointless self-torture. They say you can feel whether someone loves you or not, but with Clifford, she felt nothing. Sometimes, she felt he loved her to death; other times, she was certain she didn't exist in his heart at all. For years, she had been caught between these two feelings, and only his own admission could settle it.

Soon, they arrived at her hotel. He turned his head to look at her. “We’re here. Get out.”

Yesenia didn’t move, her head bowed, her thoughts a tangled mess.

“There is a point…” Her voice softened. “I’m afraid… I can’t hold on much longer.”

Clifford stared at her, his expression unreadable in the shadows.

“Then don’t make it so hard on yourself,” he said, taking her hand. “If you want to get married, find a good man. The way I’ve treated you before is how I’ll treat you in the future.”

Yesenia was stunned again, looking at him in confusion.

“You mean… even if I get married, you’ll still be this good to me?”

“You could see it that way.”

But Yesenia couldn’t understand it at all. She stared at him in disbelief. “Why? If you can be so good to me, why wouldn’t you feel even a little bit sad if I got married?”
