She tugged at a loose corner, but while the edge came off, the center was still attached to healing skin. A sharp pull tore at the flesh beneath.
Latisha quickly pressed down on the gauze, taking deep breaths for several seconds to push through the searing pain.
“What are you doing to it?”
The sudden voice made her jump. She looked up to see the man kneeling in front of her, his hand pressing gently on her injured knee.
Latisha stared at him, stunned.
Clifford glanced at the wound, where fresh blood was already seeping through. He frowned and looked up at her. “Are you that bored?”
Latisha bit her lip and gave an honest nod. She was. Anyone would go crazy being cooped up in a house like this day after day.
“Stay here. Don’t move.”
Clifford stood up and retrieved the first-aid kit, returning to her side. He actually knew where the kit was now. How impressive.
Latisha watched him silently as he opened it, took out fresh gauze, and carefully re-dressed her knee. He then sat down beside her.
“Don’t touch it again,” he instructed. “Let the scab fall off on its own. Understand?”
Latisha nodded, her eyes fixed on him. He was still wearing the same clothes from three days ago, his black overcoat now dusted with a few white specks. She instinctively reached out to brush the lint from his collar, but after a couple of pats, he caught her hand.
She looked up at him, puzzled. His deep eyes locked onto hers.
“Latisha,” he said, his voice low and serious, “if I get kicked off the board of the Lambert Group, if all my assets are frozen and I’m left with nothing, will you run away?”
Latisha was taken aback. She didn’t understand what he meant or why he would ask such a question. Was he testing her?
Her heart began to pound, her mind going blank. And in that moment of shock, her first thought wasn't of concern for him, but of the realization that if he were powerless, he could no longer control her. That thought was stronger than any worry she felt.
Clifford watched her intently, catching the subtle shift in her eyes. His own gaze turned icy.
“Are you thinking that if I’m kicked off the board and left with nothing, I won’t be able to control you anymore?”
His words sent a shiver down her spine. She shook her head frantically, raising her hands to sign an explanation.
Clifford swatted her hands away, his smile now laced with a chilling coldness.
“Latisha, you’re still thinking about leaving, aren’t you?”
Her eyes flickered. All she could do was shake her head, again and again.
