Latisha closed one notebook and picked up another. This one was old, its pages yellowed and the scrawled writing on them faded and blurry. She flipped through the pages, her childhood wishes laid bare. There were only a few, but every single one had come true.
She’d wanted to go to an amusement park. She’d wanted a cake, a giant lollipop, to watch her favorite cartoons. A white princess dress, butterfly hair clips. And… she had wanted to marry him.
That was the last wish in the notebook. The rest of the pages were blank. She had married Clifford, and her wishes had run out, as if her story had reached its grand finale.
But life’s finale hadn’t arrived yet. Nikita once said that after the grand finale of any movie or story comes the mundane, ordinary life that no one wants to watch.
And so, after all her wishes were granted, Clifford stopped coming home. Her days were spent in a cold, empty villa, a life as stagnant as a pool of still water, with nothing exciting to look forward to.
Latisha turned to the last written page. She picked up a pen and, after her final childhood wish, began to write new ones.
...
By three in the morning, she was getting drowsy. Looking at the list she’d just made, she realized there were still so many things she wanted to do. She let out a breath and carefully closed the notebook, taking both of them to the utility room to hide them away. It was the one room Clifford would never enter.
The following night, Clifford came home. Latisha saw him and immediately stood up. He didn’t even look at her, just strode upstairs and came back down a few moments later. As he passed her, he paused.
“Don’t go wandering off,” he said.
With just those few words, he was gone again. Latisha stared at the empty doorway, biting her lip.
