The Day Silence Spoke novel Chapter 288

Latisha sat motionless on the sofa, her eyes habitually fixed on the clock on the wall, watching the second hand tick by. She always did this when waiting for Clifford, wondering with each tick if this would be the moment he returned. Most of the time, he never did.

After midnight, she remembered her notebook and retrieved it to jot down more memories. She could recall so many things from her past with perfect clarity; it would be a shame to lose such vivid moments. There were also so many things she wanted to do, and she worried that if she forgot everything, she would also forget those aspirations.

Curled up on the sofa, she was writing when the sound of footsteps behind her made her jump. Seeing the familiar face of the man standing there, she instinctively hid the notebook behind her back.

Her guilty gesture didn't fool Clifford. He held out his hand. "Give it to me."

Latisha clutched the notebook tighter. He stood over her, dressed in a black trench coat, a black suit, and a silver-grey shirt. The dark colors made him a stark, imposing figure under the warm lights of the living room.

"Is there something in there I'm not allowed to see?" he asked again.

She shook her head.

His eyes darkened. He extended his long fingers toward her once more. "Give it to me."

Her palms grew sweaty as she held onto the notebook. Some of the things she’d written were indeed private, especially from him.

Before she could think of an excuse, Clifford leaned down, pinning her shoulder with one hand while snatching the notebook from behind her back with the other. In a panic, she tried to grab it back. But the height difference was too great. He held up one arm to block her while he casually flipped open the book with his other hand.

Latisha’s eyes widened slightly. The moment he opened it, she stopped struggling. He’d already seen it. His expression shifted subtly as he glanced over at her.

Shamefaced, Latisha lowered her head.
