The Day Silence Spoke novel Chapter 41

“You… can’t you just stop for one second?” Killian pleaded, his voice tight with frustration.

“No. Are you going or not?” Nikita was now perched on the windowsill, and when she glanced down, a shiver of fear ran through her. She didn’t actually have the nerve to jump, but she knew it was the only way to get through to her brother.

“Alright, alright, I’m going!” he said, his voice laced with panic. “Just get down from there, now!”

Nikita grinned and hopped back into the room. “Hurry up. I’ll be waiting for your call.”

Killian ended the call with a sigh, excused himself from his meeting, and drove to Clifford’s villa. The house was dark and silent. He rang the doorbell, but there was no answer. Just as he was about to leave, his phone buzzed. It was a message from Nikita with the code to the front door.

For a moment, he hesitated. This was breaking and entering.

But his worry for Latisha overrode his caution. He punched in the code, and the door clicked open.

He stepped inside, calling her name. There was no response. Just as he was about to leave, he heard a faint thud from upstairs. He followed the sound to a locked door at the end of the hallway.

“Latisha?” he called. Silence. He tried the handle. Locked. “Latisha, are you in there?”

Even Killian, who had tried so hard to stay out of it, felt a surge of rage. How could Clifford do this? To his own wife, who was carrying his child?

He carefully lifted her into his arms and raced to the hospital. Once she was in the emergency room, he finally answered one of the dozens of calls from Nikita.

“Did you find her?”

To keep her from doing something reckless, he lied. “She’s fine. She was just at home.”
