Killian, as always, saw the bigger picture. If they fixated on the tampered brakes and went head-to-head with Clifford, they would be the only ones to lose. After all, Nikita was the one behind the wheel, which meant Clifford held all the cards. Their only viable option was to appeal to him, to persuade him to back down.
Hadrian nodded, his expression grim. “I suppose that’s our only choice. You two are close; you should be the one to talk to him.”
“Alright.” Killian glanced back at Nikita. The defiant spark had been extinguished, and he figured she would lie low for a good while.
...
Latisha scoured the internet, but every corner of it was filled with vitriol directed at Nikita. Online mobs were vicious. A typical car accident might trend for a day or two before fading into obscurity, but this was different. Nikita was the heiress to a fortune, and the severity of the crash, fanned by clout-chasing bloggers and a general resentment for the rich, had turned the incident into an uncontrollable firestorm within hours.
Theories swirled online, but none offered a clear picture of what would happen to Nikita. Latisha couldn’t resist sending her a message, but she received no reply. She didn’t dare try to see her in person, terrified that Clifford would get wind of it and make things even worse. All she could do was sit at home, consumed by helpless anxiety.
...
Meanwhile, Ziven was reporting the situation at the office.
“At this rate, the story will become too big to contain. The authorities will have to step in, and it’s almost certain Nikita will face prison time.”
Clifford flipped through a document, his tone nonchalant. “What about the two man?”
“Dead. There was nothing left.”
“I see. You may go.”
Flint: [Savage.]
Renata: [Is this what I think it is?]
Last Dream: [Yesenia is officially my hero!]
Ryan: [What are you guys talking about? Did I miss something? I’ve been out of the country for a few days.]
Latisha closed the app, her gaze falling. So, this was all about Yesenia after all. When she had worked at Nikita’s shop, everything had been fine. But from the moment Nikita slapped Yesenia, Clifford’s attitude had shifted. This time, Nikita had said the wrong thing, and Clifford was settling old and new scores at once.
And she, Latisha, had merely been the spark that lit the fuse.
