Latisha grabbed Nikita’s hand and shook her head, trying to tell her not to go.
Nikita seemed to understand. She chuckled. “I had to sneak out to get here. If I miss this chance, it’ll be a lot harder to come back.”
Latisha tightened her grip, refusing to let go.
Nikita looked at her stubborn face and was at a loss for words. The rain had stopped, and the sun was peeking through the clouds.
After a long moment, Nikita’s smile faded. She looked at Latisha seriously. “Latisha, if people hadn’t died, I would almost be grateful to Clifford. He showed me who my real friends are.”
“But…” she smiled faintly, “you didn’t make me regret it. So what I did was worth it.”
Latisha still didn’t let go. The strength disparity between them was huge; Nikita could have easily pushed her away with a flick of her wrist, but she didn’t.
“Let go of me, Latisha.”
Latisha shook her head.
Nikita laughed again at her persistence. Just then, a car sped by, and an empty can flew out the window, smacking Nikita squarely on the forehead. It didn’t hurt, but the sound was loud and jarring.
The hostile, humiliating act instantly silenced the air between them.
Latisha turned to look, but the car, a taxi, was already far down the street.
After a long pause, Nikita turned back, acting as if nothing had happened. “See? This is my life now. A rat in the street that everyone wants to stomp on.”
Latisha let go of her and signed, *It’s not your fault.*
Nikita scanned the group. There were several middle-aged people who were likely also victims’ relatives. They started wailing as soon as they arrived.
“You rich people are monsters! There’s no justice! You kill people in broad daylight and get away with it! Give me back my son!”
“Oh, God, open your eyes and punish these black-hearted people!”
Latisha saw their aggressive posturing and glanced worriedly at Nikita, who seemed to have gone numb, watching their performance with a blank expression.
Seeing her lack of reaction, a few of the men grew agitated. “Tie her up and drag her to the police station! Let’s see if the cops will give us an answer today!”
With that, they surged forward to grab Nikita.
