Latisha bit her lip and quietly retreated from the room. She made her way to the downstairs bathroom, only to find Santino inside washing his hands.
When he saw her, he pulled a couple of paper towels from the dispenser. “You can come in,” he said, drying his hands. “I’m done.”
She managed a faint smile and stepped inside.
“The floor’s a bit slippery, be care—”
Before he could finish the word, Latisha’s feet went out from under her. She flailed, trying to grab onto something, and in the chaos, her hand found his arm. Santino moved with lightning speed, catching her around the waist. They ended up in a startlingly intimate embrace, her body pressed against his.
Latisha clung to his arm, her glistening eyes wide as she looked up at him.
Santino froze, the hand on her waist suddenly feeling like it was on fire. Renata was right; Latisha had captivating eyes. They were clean and clear, yet they held a depth that felt like an endless well of emotion. There was nothing overtly seductive about her, but it made one want to stir those clear waters until they were murky. It was like the strange impulse some people get to squeeze a cute animal, an urge to disrupt something pure.
For the first time, the perfect mask of his expression showed a crack.
Just then, two maids walked by the open door. They saw the compromising position and gasped before scurrying away in embarrassment.
Santino immediately released her, his composure slightly frayed. “Are you all right?”
Latisha took a step back, creating distance between them, and shook her head. *I’m fine. Thank you.*
He gave a slight nod and left the bathroom. After the door clicked shut, Santino paused, glancing back at the closed door. The smile on his lips faded just a little.
The little mute wasn’t afraid of him anymore.
Interesting.
In a house this size, gossip spread like wildfire. The story of Latisha and Santino’s embrace in the bathroom was soon making the rounds among the staff.
The maids’ faces went pale as they exchanged nervous glances, too afraid to speak.
“Tell me everything you saw,” Renata demanded.
“We were just making it up…”
Before the maid could finish, Renata’s expression turned venomous. “Making it up? You dare to spread rumors like this? Do you want to be fired?”
Her sharp gaze swept over them. “Now, tell me. Everything you saw and everything you heard.”
One of the maids swallowed hard and, trembling, recounted the entire story.
Renata’s expression was a storm of emotions. It wasn’t that she didn’t trust Santino, but after two years of marriage, she still couldn't figure him out. He always wore that mask, seeming close yet separated by an invisible wall. She could never get any nearer.
