Sometimes, Latisha truly envied Yesenia. She had no official title, but Clifford adored her. If she wanted a job, he found her one. If she wanted to be a star, he would make her one.
And her? She was only fit to wash dishes.
Latisha gave a slight nod, accepting her fate.
Clifford’s expression darkened. “It seems you really do enjoy this kind of work. From now on, you’ll pay for your own living expenses, including the salary for that housekeeper you hired.”
With that, he stood up and went upstairs.
A few minutes later, he came back down, dressed to go out, and left the villa. Normally, he would stay after changing. It seemed even his own rules could be broken.
...
The next morning, Ziven arrived to take her to work.
He drove her to a five-star restaurant and led her straight to the back kitchen, handing her over to a stout, round-faced woman.
Ziven gave her a complicated look. “Mrs. Lambert… take care of yourself. If it gets to be too much, just apologize to Mr. Lambert.”
Latisha was still trying to process his words when Ziven turned and left.
The stout woman grabbed her arm. “You’re the new girl, right? Get to it. They need those dishes out front! From now on, you’re in charge of washing every dish in this place. Be quick about it, you hear me?”
The lunch rush was a chaotic peak. The dishes piled up faster than she could clean them. Before long, all ten of her fingers were white and pruned, a stinging pain shooting through them at the slightest touch.
The stout woman kept yelling at her to go faster, which only made Latisha more flustered. Her hand slipped, and a plate crashed to the floor, shattering into pieces.
The woman didn't yell this time. She just calmly took out a small notebook, jotted something down, and said, “That’s one. Clean it up yourself and get back to work.”
Latisha’s cold hadn’t fully healed, and standing for so long was making her dizzy. She gripped the edge of the sink, taking a few deep breaths to steady herself.
She crouched down to pick up the broken shards, and just as she was throwing them away, someone rushed past, bumping into her. A sharp pain shot through her hand. Her ring finger was sliced open, and blood began to well up from the cut.
