The Double or more Life of the Fake Heiress (Mirabella) novel Chapter 1756

"Even if it's just a cocktail, there's still a bit of alcohol in it," James remarked as he swapped out Mirabella's drink for a glass of juice that he had been holding.

Mirabella cast a reluctant glance at the juice now in her hand before turning her attention to him. "What brings you here?"

James was dressed to the nines in a sleek black tuxedo, adorned with gold embroidery that perfectly complemented Mirabella's vintage gown, making them look like a duo straight off a fashion runway.

Their good looks made them an undeniably striking pair.

"I got an invite from the Duke's estate too," James said with a casual lift of his glass, taking a sip.

"Why didn't you tell me yesterday?" Mirabella asked, giving him a once-over. "Come on, be honest. Was this part of some grand plan?"

James put on a dramatic sigh. "Well, with a girlfriend as stunning as you, I had to make sure no one's trying to whisk you away."

Mirabella rolled her eyes, clearly not buying into his theatrics.

James chuckled, setting his glass aside and picking up a dessert. He speared a small piece with a fork and offered it to her. "There are some elite assassins here tonight at the Duke’s estate."

He spoke quietly, ensuring only Mirabella could hear.

"Elite assassins?" Mirabella's eyes flickered, but she kept her cool, accepting the dessert.

"Yeah, they've been enhanced, making them tougher than your average hitman," James explained casually, like he was discussing the latest gossip.

Mirabella was momentarily reminded of some unpleasant memories but composed herself quickly, saying, "Enhanced or not, they're still human."

James raised an eyebrow, "True."

He didn't dwell on it, instead offering her another piece of cake.

James raised an eyebrow and said to Murray with a hint of amusement, "Just make sure my girlfriend is well looked after, Count."

Murray initially thought James might decline, but seeing his agreement, his eyes flickered in acknowledgment. "Of course."

He called over his wife to join them.

Once the Countess arrived, Murray led James away.

Truth be told, he hadn't expected James to show up tonight, but his presence didn't throw a wrench in Murray's plans.

After all, she was just a woman.

**The Countess, a former royal princess with an air of grace and poise, was momentarily taken aback by Mirabella's beauty upon seeing her. However, recalling her husband's instructions, she could only feel a tinge of regret.
