Chapter 17
Jennifer followed behind Brayan and Catalina into the manor, where the whole extended family was already gathered.
“Catalina? It’s been so long! You’re getting more and more beautiful.”
“I heard you just returned from overseas and even earned a PhD in psychology. So impressive!”
“Brayan said you’ve started working at VelvetRose? You will be the next world–renowned jewelry designer!”
The women surrounded Catalina as if she were the one married to Brayan.
Only Ruby Owens, one of Brayan’s aunts–in–law, noticed Jennifer.
“Don’t dawdle. The kitchen is overwhelmed. Get over there and help!”
She pulled off her apron and tossed it at Jennifer.
Jennifer caught the apron in one swift motion.
She had done this so many times that it was just pure instinct this time.
But holding the dirty apron in her hands, she didn’t tie it around her waist like she used to.
Back at previous family gatherings, Jennifer had always been he busiest one.
Jennifer had to handle over thirty dishes all on her own, including washing, cooking, and plating.

Marcel had told her not to work so hard, especially since the residence had professional chefs and maids.
But Jennifer knew he preferred the meals she cooked. So every time, she volunteered for the job.
The other family members, for Marcel’s sake, would toss her a few lukewarm compliments.
Once the meal was done, Jennifer would have to wash all the dishes and clean the place.
Because her mother–in–law always said a good wife must know how to do the chores.
Jennifer would feel tired. But after a full day of exhaustion, she would get to hear Brayan say thank you.
Just a simple “thank you” would drive away all her fatigue.
How foolish she used to be.
“What are you standing around for? Get to it already!”
Urged by Ruby, Jennifer still didn’t move. Instead, she tossed the dirty apron aside.
“There are chefs and maids in the kitchen. I’ll just get in the way.”
Ruby was stupefied.
“What are you saying? As a wife in the LeBlanc family, you’ve to help out!”
“Aren’t you also a wife in the LeBlanc family? Why aren’t you helping out?” Jennifer snapped back.

That retort nearly made Ruby bite her tongue in anger.
“Watch your manners! I’m an elder. How can you compare yourself to me?”
“Well then, as an elder, shouldn’t you be setting a good example for me? You should be more considerate and take the initiative to help out.”
Jennifer’s response left Ruby dumbfounded.
She’d known Jennifer for a long time and never imagined Jennifer could be so sharp–tongued.
“What’s wrong with you today? Donna! Come here and see what kind of daughter–in–law you have!”
Ruby called over Donna Patterson.
Donna was Jennifer’s mother–in–law.
The commotion began to draw attention from others around.
Out of the corner of her eye, Jennifer caught a glimpse of Brayan’s disappointed look.
“What’s all the noise about?”
