Lydia arrived late, delayed by the storm. She even got two traffic tickets along the way.

The moment she saw Jennifer, pale–faced and dressed in a patient’s gown, hooked up to an IV and coughing intermittently, her eyes immediately filled with tears.

“Jenny…” she sobbed.

Seeing her about to cry, Jennifer quickly reassured her that it wasn’t anything serious.

She gave Lydia a brief summary of what had happened, and Lydia jumped up in outrage,

“It had to be that manipulative bitch! I bet she hired those thugs to harass you!”

Jennifer shushed her and forced a smile. “How would you know that? There’s no proof.”

“I just know,” Lydia said firmly, pounding her chest. “Come on, this is how it always goes in novels. This is fiction bleeding into reality.”

Jennifer didn’t deny the guess. But Aaron and his gang had a history of harassing female instructors. Plus, she did clash with them over Jasper. So it was hard to say whether Catalina had anything to do with this or

not.

The thing that baffled her was running into Brayan and Catalina at her lowest moment. It seemed more than just a little coincidence.

Jennifer gave a wry smile.

She had to admit Lydia might be right. Brayan was no longer the boy she’d known in juvie, but a completely different man now.

“Hey, don’t get mad at me for insulting him!” Lydia said.

Knowing she was still trying to be sensitive to her feelings, Jennifer sighed.

“I’m divorcing him. I’m not defending him anymore.”

“You?” Lydia shot Jennifer a skeptical glance and shook her head. “You say that now, but…”

Jennifer knew her hopeless romantic streak had always driven Lydia

crazy.

Just then, the hospital room door burst open. It was Jasper.

“Ms. Griffin!”

Seeing Jennifer in the hospital bed with Lydia nearby, he instantly realized how rude he’d been.

“Sorry, sorry! I should’ve knocked.”

Jennifer wasn’t offended at all. She introduced the two of them and Lydia immediately started playing matchmaker.

“This one’s a keeper,” Lydia said, giving a thumbs–up, and pointing at Jasper. “The way he ran in here like his life depended on it? That

Jasper blushed. He scratched his head, bashful but pleased.

Jennifer looked a little awkward. She didn’t want Jasper to get the Wrong idea.
