Adam Jennings was initially taken aback, then suddenly turned his head.
"Cough cough..."
He saw Kingston Jennings standing in the hallway not far behind him, his expression sullen but calm. Upon noticing Adam’s glance, he couldn’t help but let out two low coughs.
Adam couldn’t help but glare and then inexplicably felt his ears start to burn.
What followed was a wave of indescribable embarrassment and anger.
At this moment, if he still didn’t realize Scarlett Jennings was doing it on purpose, he’d be as much of an idiot as Chase Jennings.
He turned his head, gave Scarlett a fierce glare, then decisively lifted his leg and walked away briskly.
Kingston watched him walk away quickly, a dark glimmer passing through his eyes, but his expression didn’t change much. He just looked down and typed:
[Why did you deliberately say those things to trick him?]
"Just felt like he cares about you quite a bit," Scarlett said, pausing for a moment, "it seems like you don’t know."
Since Kingston came back, Scarlett hadn’t seen the two brothers speaking, but from Adam’s reaction to Kingston’s matters, his attitude toward Kingston was at least different from that of Michael Jennings, their biological father.
Kingston listened to Scarlett’s words, but his expression remained indifferent,
[He hates me.]
He was solitary by nature and mute; having such a brother was something shameful to mention.
Moreover, because of his attitude towards their parents, Adam had been very displeased with him when he was young.
Hating him was something Adam said out loud himself.
Scarlett listened to Kingston’s words but was unfazed,
"How someone treats you can’t be judged only by what they say; you need to look at what they do."
This principle was something Scarlett came to understand gradually after returning to the Jennings Family.
For example, her father had never been good at expressing affection.
And, for another example, the present Kingston.
Though he had shown a goodwill toward her from the beginning, different from Lucas and the other brothers,
Even going so far as to reveal his Power of Word Spirit to help her, Scarlett sometimes felt he might not like her that much.
That feeling wasn’t quite hatred, more like...a sense of competition.
Scarlett was sure she had no prior interactions with Kingston, so the only thing that could connect him to her was—
Her mother.
"Did you help me today because of my mother?"
She couldn’t think of another reason.
Kingston was a bit surprised by her sharpness, but he didn’t plan to keep hiding it from her.
She had devoted herself to resolving her Child Life, and Kingston wasn’t an ungrateful person.
[I helped you, indeed, because of Aunt.]
Because she was her daughter, that’s why he chose to act at that moment.
He knew if Aunt were still around, she’d definitely want him to do such a thing.
Whether it shortened his lifespan or not didn’t matter much to him.
Because Aunt had once told him that his gifted special abilities must have their purpose.
[You asked me before who taught me how to be the proxy for the Child, and now I can tell you.]
Scarlett’s mind was stirred when he suddenly brought this up, almost reflexively considering a possibility.
"Was it... my mother?"
Scarlett’s face rarely showed such a dumbfounded look.
She should have guessed; Kingston was so young back then and so frail that ordinary people could hardly get near him, let alone teach him so much.
If that person had always been her caring mother, it would all make sense.
But, it turns out her mother also knew Mystical Sect techniques...
