Scarlett Jennings felt a rush in front of her eyes as she was suddenly embraced.
The scent belonging to Samuel Chalmers, along with the golden light, enveloped her.
Her body stiffened slightly, momentarily forgetting to think, and she didn’t notice the suddenly intensified golden light.
Her mind went blank for a moment, forgetting to push the other person away, unable to recall what she had just said, she barely managed to call out to him,
"Samuel, Samuel Chalmers?"
She thought that if she spoke out, Samuel would release her, yet he merely responded softly,
"Hmm."
Samuel Chalmers’ voice was very light, as if afraid of startling her.
He wasn’t unaware of how her body stiffened slightly in his arms, nor was he oblivious to the abruptness of his actions.
Yet, he didn’t want to let go.
The atmosphere between them became increasingly subtle with such a response.
Liora Gold and Araminta Gold peeked out from their pockets.
Their round heads tilted, looking at one, then the other.
Finally, the two little ones covered their eyes with their tiny hands and gently floated to the ground.
They turned their heads, pitter-pattered away.
Even though they had golden light, they didn’t want to be third wheels.
Scarlett Jennings was trying to figure out the situation when she noticed the two little papermen sneaking away hand in hand.
Unexpectedly, she felt a guilty conscience as if caught in the act.
Awkwardly shifting, Scarlett considered whether to directly speak up for Samuel to let her go, but before she could decide, his arms had already loosened.
Samuel Chalmers stepped back, looking at her, his eyes returning to their usual calmness, only saying,
"Sorry."
He offered no explanation as to why he suddenly held her.
Scarlett Jennings couldn’t quite articulate her feelings.
Back with the Jennings family, she had tried close interactions with those around her.
But Samuel’s embrace was somehow different from her brother’s or father’s hugs.
His embrace was warmer, hotter than his exterior suggested.
Not unlikable.
It even made one somewhat... attached.
This feeling was so unfamiliar that Scarlett Jennings’s ears seemed to warm slightly.
She couldn’t help but wonder if this was also an effect of the golden light around Samuel?
That’s right, the golden light.
Scarlett’s sanity returned at last, and looking at Samuel in front of her again, she was baffled.
This golden light... why does it seem a bit brighter than before?
Though not as intense as initially, it’s indeed brighter compared to just now.
"Your golden light..."
Scarlett pointed to his chest, looking somewhat puzzled.
She was truly uncertain.
Was the golden light around Samuel really merit golden light?
Which family’s merit golden light is this unstable?
Could it suddenly regain strength because of holding her?
At this possibility, Scarlett’s expression stiffened again.
She felt she might be overthinking.
Her determination,
Stay firm.
Seeing her expression shift from initial confusion to a resolute pretense of calm, Samuel helplessly interrupted her thoughts, continuing with her words,
"What about the golden light?"
Scarlett, snapping back to reality upon hearing the question, looked at Samuel again, merely saying,
"It’s nothing."
Scarlett didn’t have the courage to step forward and verify her hypothesis by hugging him again, so she decided to hold off.
Remembering what she’d said before, she asked him,
"About the task, is it okay with you?"
After a pause, seemingly worried he might be too busy, she added, "If you’re really too busy, I can think of another way."
"No need, let’s do it your way."
Without waiting for Scarlett to reconsider, Samuel straightforwardly responded,
