Demon Street.
In the Third District Demon Street, there is only one bookstore.
The owner of the bookstore is a ghost.
He is also the only ghost allowed to freely conduct business in Demon Street.
Scarlett Jennings pushed the door open and entered. The light inside wasn’t very bright, with towering bookshelves three stories high filled with various books.
The faint scent of ink filled the air, yet it wasn’t the typical smell of book-printing ink.
As Scarlett’s gaze shifted, she noticed a head popping out from between the bookshelves on the second floor.
Soon enough, the body connected to the head squeezed through the shelf gap; it was a man dressed in ancient attire. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
The man donned the garb of an ancient scholar, with very noticeable dark circles under his eyes. Unlike ordinary ghosts, the ghostly aura around him wasn’t prominent; instead, it was enveloped by a faint layer of Golden Light.
That was genuine Merit Golden Light.
Seeing that a guest had arrived, the male ghost immediately floated down from the upstairs shelves, landing in front of Scarlett Jennings, clasping hands in a polite bow.
Scarlett courteously returned the gesture. The other seemed pleasantly surprised and immediately bowed to her again.
This time, Scarlett didn’t return the gesture, standing where she was, simply staring at him.
The man, whose name was Long En, seemed slightly disappointed, but still politely asked her,
"Are you here to look for a book, miss?"
Scarlett nodded and said,
"I’m wondering if you have any manuscripts about the Crippled Heaven Kingdom."
With conspicuous dark circles, Long En pondered a bit,
"Today, everyone seems interested in the Crippled Heaven Kingdom..."
Scarlett raised an eyebrow, about to ask who else had inquired about it. Her peripheral vision inadvertently caught a glimpse of Golden Light.
Long En pointed towards it, saying, "Someone else is already looking at the book you want. You’ll have to wait your turn."
Scarlett had already guessed who it might be. Hesitating for a moment, she nonetheless headed towards the alcove behind the shelves.
The room, antiquated in style, was now aglow with a half-room of Golden Light.
A quick turn of her step, and Scarlet easily spotted the place with the most radiant Golden Light—there stood Samuel Chalmers, holding an ancient book behind the shelves.
When he saw her appear, Samuel Chalmers was not surprised, silently handing the book over,
"Here’s the book you’re looking for."
"Thank you."
Scarlett accepted the book, ready to leave with it.
Taking it, but it didn’t budge.
She turned her head, seeing Samuel looking at her,
"Perhaps you should take a look at the content first."
Scarlett was a bit puzzled but still accepted the book, flipping a page, then fell silent.
The writing in the book, she couldn’t understand.
It seemed like ancient hieroglyphics, or perhaps the Ghost Master’s Water Script.
In any case, it was unlike any language she had learned.
Scarlett immediately understood what Samuel had meant earlier, but she didn’t speak right away. Instead, she took out her phone.
After confirming with a translation app that the writing in the book couldn’t be translated, she then looked at Samuel Chalmers,
"Can you understand the writing in this book?"
Samuel nodded,
"It’s Ancient Script."
He paused, seemingly uncharacteristically proactive,
"I can help you translate."
Long En, having drifted over from somewhere among the shelves, upon hearing Samuel’s words, instinctively pointed to himself.
