While Karl and Dana settled in for some hard-earned alone time, Rae prepared for the arrival of their unwanted guests.
She could already sense the silly children who thought that they were sneaky while they watched the Mayor’s house. They hadn’t even hidden their murderous intent properly. She could sense it even with their auras hidden.
Rae stalked out of the house to go inspect one who was showing signs of moving.
This seemed like the perfect moment to vent some frustrations about having been left out of whatever fun things Cara and Karl got to do. They had definitely gotten to kill new things, and she was not invited.
No matter what Misty said, that was just unfair treatment.
The barrier around the building didn’t even try to stop her incorporeal form when she crept through an open window, and Rae smiled to herself. They needed to work on their security.
She didn’t linger on the thought for long, though. Her target was moving.
Why was he headed for the servant quarters with that murderous intent? Did he have an accomplice?
Rae use [Unobtrusive Behemoth] to shrink her spider form to the size of a small dog, and used her web to silently prepare a trap along the roof, so she could trap her target and question him.
Then the man turned, and she saw him picking the lock on a door at the end of the hall.
There was a Totem Ranked barrier and alarm system on the room, and Rae sighed dejectedly. She had misjudged. His murderous intent and his attention to the Mayor’s house were unrelated. He wanted to kill the woman in this room, and he had been watching the party with envy.
Well, he could let this play out while she extended her sense to the other potential targets.
The man managed to get the door unlocked, and then used a magical item to disable the alarm for a few seconds while he entered. So, she followed him in.
There were three people inside, one fat old man, and two dragonkin girls with collars around their necks.
Well, this was interesting. The barrier had completely altered their soul appearance from the outside. She should ask someone how to do that.
The assassin crept up to the bed, and slammed his dagger down into the fat man’s chest.
Blinding blue light flared, and the man leapt to his feet, enraged and instantly aware of the threat.
"Did you think that I would let you actually kill me?" He roared, and the air crackled with power as he prepared to unleash Dragon Breath in the enclosed space.
Rae snagged the two dragonkin girls and moved back outside the doorway to watch the entertainment as the two faced off.
The Rogue didn’t speak, only launched a flurry of skills at the fat dragon, who unleashed his breath weapon in the room, and equipped a staff to defend himself.
The wall exploded outward as the dragon unleashed an area skill, hurling the Rogue through the window and out into the courtyard.
[Night Haunter] saved the two dragonkin girls from injury, as the man whose bed they had been sharing had apparently forgotten about them. He simply turned to the destroyed window and continued raining spells on the attacker.
