Wendy’s brow furrowed at the sight before her, and the bodyguard who had been watching Jean stumbled out in a panic.
–
“I’m sorry she managed to untie the rope when I wasn’t looking. I couldn’t hold her back no matter what I did.”
The man was trembling, knowing full well he had ruined Wendy’s plans.
The moment Jean stepped out of the villa, Eliza said, “Ms. Wendy, do you still have anything to say? Jean just walked out of your villa. I don’t think claiming you didn’t kidnap her holds much weight right now.”
—
Wendy’s expression twisted. She had offered Jean such generous terms – for the first time in years, someone had refused her.
Jean came to stand beside Eliza, her gaze brimming with contempt and disdain for Wendy.
“I know you’re worried about your family,” Eliza told her. “Don’t be. They’re already under my protection. No one will be able to harm them.”
Jean nodded firmly.
Eliza was the one she trusted most
“Let’s go.”
—
the only person capable of bringing Wendy down.
Eliza took Jean’s hand and led her into the car, leaving Wendy standing alone.
The bodyguard beside her kept his head down. “There will be other chances.”
“Chances?” Wendy snapped. “Didn’t you see that little brat is impossible to sway? If she won’t listen, then get rid of her.”
With that, she turned and went back inside.
Meanwhile, Eliza’s eyes darkened as she took in the rope burns on Jean’s wrists and the streak of blood across half her face,
“Wendy laid hands on you? What exactly did she want?”
“She wanted me to work for her,” Jean said. “She offered me generous terms and threatened me. She said if I didn’t help her, my younger brother and sister would die with me.”
There had been a moment of wavering in her heart she didn’t want her siblings to die
because of her.
But Jean knew monsters like Wendy never kept their word. She would never help an evil like

Eliza hadn’t expected someone so small in stature to have such a strong heart. Even faced with Wendy’s threats, Jean hadn’t wavered.
“I’ve already arranged for your family to be protected. Wendy won’t be able to touch them. But as things stand, we don’t have enough evidence to arrest her yet. Still, now that the police are investigating, the truth will come out soon. She won’t be able to escape.”
Eliza spoke with conviction, but worry still flickered in her eyes. Wendy had deep connections in Westbrook. If someone tipped her off, she might vanish overseas before they could act.
“Don’t worry,” Nolan said. “I’ve already alerted customs. If she tries to leave the country, I’ll know immediately.”
“Good,” Eliza said with a nod. “It’s lucky we have you.”
A faint smile touched Nolan’s lips. If it was for Eliza, he would do anything.
Then Eliza turned to Jean. “While you were inside, did you notice anything unusual about the place?”
“I was too scared to pay much attention… but the furnishings looked old. Like they were from twenty years ago. Even the phone and appliances were that old – nothing like today’s styles. It must be a really old house. Like a little Western–style villa.”
Eliza and Nolan had been outside earlier, so she hadn’t seen the interior herself.
But at Jean’s description, Eliza immediately thought of something Henry had once told her how, more than twenty years ago, a young Wendy had been in love. For the sake of the Foster family, she had been forced to give up her happiness, and the man had died in depression.
Thinking over the location of the house, Eliza realized that while it was in the city center, it sat on a quiet, hidden street, the sort of place no one would notice.
Could this little villa be the love nest Wendy once shared with that man?
A woman’s intuition could be unreasonable, but perhaps the young Wendy hadn’t been so fiercely ambitious. Perhaps she had once been just a girl in love, wanting nothing more than to stay by her man’s side – and had bought this place as their secret haven.
