Hearing Nolan’s explanation, Eliza immediately thought of the Claire University medical school laboratory the one that had been in use for over twenty years, until they unearthed piles of human bones beneath it.
All of that had been Wendy’s doing.
She frowned. “Do you think… this place could also-”
“No.
Nolan tapped her lightly on the head. “This is the city center. If Saint Corp dared to try something like that here, they’d have a death wish.”
Relieved, Eliza realized she’d been letting her paranoia run wild, imagining Saint Corp committing atrocities right under the public’s nose.
“Should we go check out Eastborough University?”
Now that they were overseas, it made sense to head straight for the factory next to Saint University. Even if Wendy had already shut it down, sneaking in wouldn’t be difficult.
Nolan, however, could see how driven she was. “You’re too tired today. Rest first. I’ll have my people look into it. If they find anything, you’ll be the first to know.”
“But-”
“Saint Corp is not as simple as it looks. Wendy definitely has someone behind her. We can’t tip our hand. Let them think we came here only to catch her. My Jojo is too smart not to understand that.”
She was impatient, yes – too eager to solve the case. But that eagerness could be dangerous.
In a situation like this, they needed calm, not rash moves. Otherwise, they would walk straight into the enemy’s trap.
Eliza steadied herself. She wanted to know the truth about her mother’s sudden hemorrhage all those years ago. Was it really Naomi’s parents? No it couldn’t be that simple,
–
If it had been, Tristan would have dealt with them long ago. The fact that he hadn’t meant her mother’s death wasn’t directly their doing. Something else was behind it – something Tristan
hadn’t told her.
She shook her head. She would find out who was really pulling the strings.
Meanwhile, Wendy had arrived at the castle.
She told her bodyguard to wait outside while she went in alone.

The place was silent, eerily so.

Clutching the badge in her hand, she walked deep into the castle, stopping before a stone statue of a robed figure. In a sudden burst of anger, she hurled the badge at it. The air seemed to grow heavier.
“Why did you take away my power? I trusted you. I worshipped you. You promised me that when everything was done, you’d make my dream come true. And now you’ve handed it all to that brat! Have you been using me all along?”
The statue didn’t move, didn’t speak.
But the air felt charged, oppressive.
“I know you’re watching me,” she said coldly. “Say something!”
The grand library echoed with only her own voice.
Fury took hold
she began smashing everything within reach, but still, no answer came.
“I’ve done so much for you all these years! Why give my power to him? How am I than he is? You promised me. You can’t lie to me!”
Her strength gave out and she slumped to the floor, looking utterly broken.
Half an hour passed before she finally walked back out.
The bodyguard had never seen her like this. “Inside, was there-‘

Her eyes were like ice as she added, “Go consolidate all my shares and hand them over to Cramer.”
The bodyguard froze.
He hadn’t expected her to willingly give Cramer the shares he had been coveting for so long. This would hand him Saint Corp’s leadership outright.
“Are you sure? If we give him everything, you’ll have nothing left.”
For years, she had ruled Saint Corp, her shares making her immensely wealthy. Without them, their research would come to a halt.
“That’s not for you to ask.”
