The King Of War Returns (Jaden Rift) novel Chapter 36

Back at Martha's house Everyone was mid-bite when a loud voice rang from outside.

"House owner! Come down and collect your paycheck!"

Martha blinked, then slapped her forehead. “Oh! I almost forgot—today’s pay day.” She stood and wiped her hands on her apron. “Just a minute, everyone. I’ll be back soon.”

She walked outside and spotted two people standing near the gate—Mr. Fredrick, a pudgy, cigarette-smoking supervisor with a round belly and arrogant glare, and a slim, sharp-mouthed woman from HR named Leslie.

“Here,” Fredrick said, handing her a brown envelope while puffing out smoke from the side of his mouth. “Take your check and don’t waste our time.”

Martha took the envelope and opened it without delay. Her brows furrowed the moment she counted the cash. “There’s a mistake,” she said, raising her eyes. “It’s supposed to be three thousand dollars, but there’s only two thousand here. A whole thousand is missing.”

Fredrick didn’t flinch. He flicked his cigarette ash to the ground with indifference. “Didn’t you take two days off? So I deducted your pay. Simple math.”

Leslie snorted, arms folded. “You should be grateful you’re even getting paid, always calling in sick like you're some queen. We should’ve fired you long ago.”

Martha clenched the envelope. “That’s not what the company policy says. If a worker calls in sick and notifies HR, their salary isn’t supposed to be deducted. I followed the rules. So why the cut?”

Fredrick leaned closer, blowing smoke in her face. “You accusing me of stealing from you, bitch?”

Martha coughed, waving the smoke away, but stood her ground. “I’m not accusing. I’m asking for what I rightfully earned.”

Leslie rolled her eyes. “You’re done working for us anyway. I’ve already replaced you. Sue us, cry, throw a tantrum, I don’t care. You’re not getting that thousand back. Go home and stay broke.”

Fredrick added with a chuckle, “Poor people like you should just shut up and take what you're given. Work like the dog you are.”

Suddenly, a calm voice echoed from the doorway.

“I hate people like you. Thieves hiding behind job titles.”

Fredrick turned with a sneer. “Who the hell—” He paused mid-turn when he saw Jaden walking forward with Marvin and Julie beside him.

Fredrick laughed and threw his arms out. “Oh, it’s just Marvin and his crew of nobodies. I thought it was someone important for a second.”

He stepped toward them, eyes gleaming with mockery. “So this woman is your relative too? No wonder she’s broke. The whole bloodline’s infected with poverty. Hahaha! Now get lost before I have someone bounce you outta here!”

Before Jaden or Marvin could even move, a shadow dropped from the side of the compound wall with terrifying speed.
