Chapter 201 – Back to School
–LIA’S POV–
A shrill sound pulled me to reality.
I sat up
gasp,
with a gasp,
my body covered in cold sweat.

I glanced around, my heart thundering in my chest, hands still trembling like they did in the forest.
It was a dream. A disgusting, cruel nightmare.
But a dream nevertheless.
The sound was my phone ringing.
I grabbed it off the side–table, relief flooding me when I saw his name flashing on the screen.
I answered the call at once, releasing a heavy breath as soon as he spoke.
“Hi, my love.”
”
I laid back down, closing my eyes. “Zane,” I whispered, voice almost breaking. “I love you.”
He chuckled softly. “I love you too. Is everything okay?”

“Yeah,” I replied. “Now it is. How are you feeling?”
“I’m doing better. My hair still hasn’t grown back.”
I laughed. “It’s okay. I like you.”

“I love you too. You ready for school? Your last active was hours ago, so I thought to wake you up.”
I frowned. “What time is it?”
“Almost eight.”
I groaned. “I’m so tired.”
“You’re just making excuses because you don’t wanna go without me.”
I sighed, turning on my side. “That too.”
“It’s just a few days, my love. Don’t worry. I’ll be up and about in no time. Picking you up in the morning.”
I smiled. “I can’t wait.”
“Me neither. But don’t worry, the Hounds will be there, “he said. “And Christy.”
“Yeah,” I nodded, “I know.”

“Hurry then. I don’t want my favourite nerd missing out on
school any longer.”
“Okay,” I replied. “I’ll go. I love you.”
“I love you too. I’ll see you soon, alright?”
“I know. Bye.”
“Bye.”
Everything looked the same.
The faded blue lockers. The white floors. The blaring announcements and the loud chatter and the smell of burnt · cafeteria toast. The halls were full, the noise level way too high for my liking. And yet, somehow, it all felt… small. Insignificant.
Almost like I didn’t belong in it anymore.
I adjusted the strap of my backpack on my shoulder, weaving through the crowd. A few people turned when they saw me, whispers spreading behind me like ripples. I wasn’t surprised. After two weeks of being gone—two weeks of the blood moon, of Zane nearly dying in my arms, of the power that exploded out of me—of course they’d have something to say.
They didn’t know what was going on in my life.

All they knew was that Lia Snow had ran away from home.
But I didn’t care.
Not really.
I kept walking.

Zane was still at the pack infirmary with Emerald, healing slowly. Too slowly. Every time I visited him, I had to remind myself he was breathing. That he was warm. That he was alive.
I sighed, exhaling through my nose, and turned down the corridor to my locker.
Aaron and Sheila passed by.
I caught their scents before I saw them. Familiar. Comforting.
“Lia,” Aaron said, nodding.
Sheila offered a quick smile. “Hey.‘
That was it. They kept walking.

No stopping. No catching up. No hugs.
I blinked, staring after them for a second, my chest tightening unexpectedly.

I wasn’t too close to them. But I’d expected more.

Not a party, but… still. After everything that happened. After everything I did.
Maybe they were just busy.
I turned back to my locker and spun the dial. My fingers were slightly cold, slower than usual. I’d barely slept last night. The dreams were too loud again. Screams. Blood. My own voice, echoing. Desperately.
“Live.”
Zane’s eyes snapping open.
My hand stilled on the lock.
Had I brought him back?
I didn’t even know what I was anymore.
I pulled the door open and stared at my books, though I wasn’t really seeing them. I felt like I was floating just outside myself, like I was in someone else’s memory of school. Everything was too bright. Too loud. Too human.
“Okay so,” Christy’s voice came from behind me, chipper as ever. “You’re not gonna believe what happened.”

I glanced over my shoulder. She had her hair up in a ponytail and two iced coffees in her hands. She offered one to me like we did this every morning. Like nothing had changed.
“Thanks,” I said, taking it. The cold plastic jolted my senses awake a bit.
“Nathan told me he imagines a future with me,” she said immediately, like it was world–shattering
I blinked at her.
She waited for my reaction.

I tried to force one. “Wow,” I smiled. “Seriously?”

She nodded, grinning. “And he said he wants me to meet his parents soon. Can you believe this? This whole time, I thought only I liked him. Like it was a one sided crush. But here he is, treating me like I’m his future wife.”
“That’s… wild,” I said, sipping the coffee.
And it was. Objectively.
But I couldn’t make myself care.
Not even a little.

Inside, I felt detached.
It all felt so pointless. So… small.

Christy kept talking, still animated, still loyal, still the same best friend who’d follow me into hell without hesitation. Who took a blow on her head to protect me. I watched her, and I loved her, I really did.
But I could barely hear her over my own thoughts.
The power that had burst through me that night still hummed beneath my skin. Still called to me when I was alone. I hadn’t
tested it again. Not really. But red the feeling.
The control.
