In spite of how terribly our last gathering at one ended, something still felt sacred about burger joints.

The cracked red booths. The sticky tables. The smell of fries clinging to your clothes for hours.

I hated to admit it, but I’d missed this.

It felt like the first normal day in forever.

“Window booth,” Aaron said, dragging Sheila towards it before anyone else could react.

“Hey!” Ajax protested, but didn’t argue further when Christy slid in beside them, already pulling out her phone.

“Wow, I’m still traumatised by this place,” she muttered, looking around. “Nathan, come on.”

Nathan lingered near the door, looking like he wanted to be anywhere but here. The guy had barely said a word since we picked him up. His eyes kept drifting to Zane, warily.

It probably had something to do with what he’d seen at prom.

It was a wonder he hadn’t brought it up again. Or maybe he had,

and Christy shut him down. She could be very persuasive when

she wanted to.

Zane strolled in last, Lia on his arm, both of them looking like they walked out of a slow–motion scene in a drama. Casual, cool, and perfectly in sync.

They joined us at the booth across from me, Zane sitting on the end with Lia tucked into his side like she lived there. Nathan hesitated, then slid in at the corner of our booth, as far from Zane as he could.

We ordered sodas and a pile of fries while everyone scanned the

menu.

Zane flipped through his. “I think I’ll get the chili melt.”

Lia barely looked up. “No, don’t get that. Get the mushroom. Go easy on your stomach for now.”

Zane didn’t blink. He didn’t argue or grumble. “Alright,” he said, folding the menu.

I frowned.

Zane didn’t like mushrooms. Maybe Lia didn’t know. But Zane definitely did.

“Mushroom?” I said, raising a brow. “You haven’t touched anything with those since fifth grade.”

Lia looked up now, frowning at Zane.

“You haven’t?”

He stared at her, like he couldn’t understand what she was saying. Like he was lost.

“Zane,” she said softly, taking his hand. “Are you okay?”

The concern in her voice was too serious.

Sheila, Aaron and Ajax glanced at them now.

Nathan and Christy were still arguing over what to order.

“Yes,” Zane said. “Sorry, what did

you ask?”

“Do you not like mushrooms?”

“Ew, no,” he replied, scrunching up his nose.

“So tell me,” she muttered, frowning. “You were about to order it because I asked. Dumbass.”

She went back to the menu, shaking her head, but Zane continued to look confused.

Then he shrugged. “I probably didn’t hear you. I’ll get the double cheese stack.”

Lia smiled, then told him she wanted chicken wings.

But I couldn’t shake the feeling in my chest.

Something about this exchange had felt odd.

“You good?” Ajax asked, nudging me under the table.

I glanced at him, then gave a nod.

“Yeah,” I muttered. “Just trying to process this PDA around me.”

“Don’t act like you don’t dream about sucking faces with Sapphire,” Aaron said, smirking.

“I don’t,” I said drily.

It was a lie.

“Sapphire?” Christy sang, suddenly tuning in to our conversation.

I pushed her by the face. “Go back to arguing with your boyfriend.”

“No,” she laughed, slapping my hand off. “Tell me. Who is this girl?”

Even Nathan cracked a smile, looking interested.

“I’ll tell you privately,” Sheila said, winking.

Christy grinned, then nodded, wiggling her eyebrows at me.

I rolled my eyes.

I reached for a fry and tried to ignore her, my eyes returning to Zane.

He reached towards the ketchup bottle, but Lia’s voice cut in softly, “No ketchup.”

Zane stopped. Like she’d pulled a leash. Then set his hand down, not saying a word.

My eyes widened.

What the hell?

I watched him for another moment. No eye roll. No smirk. Just complete acceptance, like it hadn’t even occurred to him to disagree.

Lia was saying it for his betterment. He was still healing. Still sick.

But the way he listened to her was not normal.

Christy was busy asking Ajax about something, and Nathan was distracted scanning the room like he expected someone to attack us, so no one else noticed.

But I did.

I almost said something. A joke, maybe, to test if anyone else noticed.

But the words stuck.

There was no way to say it without sounding paranoid. Or worse—like I was making an accusation.

But something was clearly not right.

Lia leaned into Zane’s shoulder again, a warm smile on her face. He kissed the top of her head and started talking to Aaron about pack training next week like nothing had happened.

I looked away, my stomach twisting uncomfortably.

“Why aren’t you eating?” Ajax asked, nudging me with his foot.

“Just not that hungry,” I said, tearing my eyes off of Zane.

Ajax gave me a look but didn’t push it.
