Chapter 227 – Fireflies
–WARNER’S POV–

I sat with my feet dipped in the lake, shoes tossed behind me on the grass. The water was cold, but it helped clear my head.
Sapphire sat down beside me a second later. She didn’t say anything at first, just nudged me with her shoulder.
“What’s up?”
“We had a quiz at school today,” I began at once, secretly desperate to hear her opinion. “Everyone begged the instructor to cancel it. He refused. Lia asked him once, and it was done.”
Sapphire smiled. “Isn’t that good?”
I turned to her. “She compelled him, Sapphire.”
“You cannot know that for sure.”
“I can,” I argued. “It was clear.”
“You’re overthinking it.”
I shook my head. “I know what I saw. Mr. Baker is not the type to back down because someone asked nicely. Something changed.”

She picked up a pebble and tossed it into the water. “Alright, okay. Even if you’re right, what do you want me to do?”
“Keep an eye on her,” I said. “Suggest something, I don’t know.” I ran a hand through my hair.
“Only if she becomes a danger, Warner. And there was my other condition.”
My heartbeat picked up.
“I know,” I replied, staring down at my reflection in the water. “I
remember.”
“And?” she asked, her tone expectant.
I took a deep breath. “I accept.”
She froze.
Silence fell. Then soft golden light started flickering around us.
Fireflies.
She’d called them for sure.
Sapphire looked at me, eyes narrowing. “You’re serious?”
I turned to face her fully. “I am. I was afraid to let you in before. I thought if I did, I’d lose control of everything else. I had never

met a witch before, and I didn’t know how you guys worked. So everything I felt for you, I dismissed, telling myself it was nothing but a trick.”
Her brows furrowed.
“But in spite of everything, you’ve always been there. You saved
been the
my life. Even when I was an ass. Even when I constantly ignored you for years.“ ́
Her gaze softened as she stared at me, and I heard her heart start to race. “You were never just an ass, Warner,” she said quietly. “You were a scared one.”
I smiled faintly. “Yeah. And you still stayed.”
Her eyes shimmered like the lake surface. “I guess I did.”
“I like you, Sapphire,” I said plainly. “More than I’ve liked anyone in a long time. You make me better. Or at least you make me want to be. And honestly… with you, I feel everything I’m supposed to feel with my destined mate. So even though you’re a witch, I guess you were right. You are my mate, Sapphire. The one destined for me. Created for me. The one who balances me.”
She blinked, and tears glistened in her eyes. One slid down her cheek, and I gently brushed it away with my thumb.
My hand lingered on her cheek. Her skin was smooth. Almost like silk.
