–LIA’S POV–

Zane and I walked out of class together, the hallway buzzing with chatter, lockers slamming shut, and the clatter of footsteps echoing around us. He hadn’t said much since the quiz papers were taken away. Just held my hand and offered a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes.

I couldn’t take it anymore.

“I didn’t do it,” I blurted, glancing up at him as we stepped outside. “I swear, I didn’t command Mr. Baker. I only asked.”

Zane stopped walking. He glanced down at me with a frown.

“I didn’t say anything, love.”

“You don’t have to. I know how it must’ve looked,” I continued quickly, my heart pounding. “But I didn’t use my powers. I didn’t even think to. I just… I freaked out when I read the paper. I didn’t know anything, and I figured asking wouldn’t hurt. That’s all.”

He gently took my hands in his. “Lia, it’s okay. I did not question you, did I?”

“It’s not,” I insisted. “And you don’t have to question me. Because I felt you. Right after it happened. That flicker of doubt.

Zane sighed, looking away for a second. “I wasn’t doubting you, Lia.”

“You were uncertain,” I said softly. “And I get it, I really do. I don’t blame you. But I need you to know… I don’t want to control anyone. Not like that. That’s not who I am. I didn’t do it, and even if it somehow happened, I didn’t do it on–”

“Hey,” Zane cut me off, taking my shoulders now. He pulled me closer and wrapped his arms around me. “Relax. I believe you, Lia. You don’t have to explain yourself like this. Not to me.”

I took a deep breath, burying my face in his chest.

“I know you’ve changed, my love. You’re a strong, badass Goddess now. Not the old, human Lia I first met. And that’s okay. That doesn’t change your heart. I know that.”

I blinked, warmth rising in my chest. He slowly rubbed my back.

“I trust you. Completely,” he added. “If you say you didn’t do it, then that’s it. No debate. No second guessing. Okay?”

I nodded slowly. “Okay.”

His hand brushed down my arm, fingers linking with mine.

I laughed, as the tension in the air eased a little.

“Still,” I mumbled, “I don’t want to rely on my powers like that. Not for small stuff. Not unless it’s life or death.”

He smiled, pulling away to meet my gaze. He cupped my face in his hands, squeezing my cheeks. “And that’s why I believe in you.”

I smiled, shoulders finally sagging with relief. “I love you.”

“I love you too. Let’s go now. I want something to eat, I’m starving.”

We ran, our hands linked as though we belonged together. Because we did.

Branches whipped past, the ground uneven and damp beneath our feet, but neither of us slowed. We didn’t even wait to put on our shoes before running towards the scream.

The scream that still echoed in my ears, high–pitched and desperate. The kind of sounds that made your gut twist.

“There!” Sapphire pointed ahead, breathless.

A girl came stumbling out from between two trees, glancing behind, her hair tangled. She was shaking all over, eyes wide and wild, barely able to speak through her sobs. She fell to the ground, and then looked up, face filling with relief when she saw

“Hey—hey, you’re safe,” Sapphire said. Her hands moved gently on the girl’s arms, magic shimmering faintly in the air, like warm light curling around the girl’s chest. Her breathing slowed almost instantly.

“Can you tell us what happened?” Sapphire asked softly. “Where were you?”

The girl blinked at us, then turned and pointed a trembling finger. “There—over there, I… I saw him, I think he’s–”

She choked on a sob.

“It’s alright. You’ve done enough,” Sapphire whispered,

brushing a calming hand through the air beside the girl’s head. “Do you know your way back home?”

The terrified girl nodded.

“Okay, good. Go home. Go straight home. Everything’s fine.”

She sniffed, nodding, and then pushed past us.

Sapphire glanced at me. “Come on.”

We moved fast, pushing through the underbrush in the direction the girl had pointed. My claws grew, eyes turning black, ready to face whatever or whoever we were about to find.

But we found him maybe fifty steps in, in no condition to attack

His body was crumpled against a fallen log, neck twisted unnaturally, throat sliced open on a sharp, jagged branch that jutted upwards. Blood soaked the ground, still fresh and wet. The scent was strong.
