The guy
had a knife. But I had a bigger one.

We were wrestling on the pavement. My partner was bleeding out beside the cruiser. Dispatch was screaming something in my ear, but all I could hear was the blood pounding in my skull.
I shoved the guy off. He ran.
I didn’t chase.
I lifted the knife to throw it at him, but then froze.
The knife turned towards me, my hand no longer in my control.
I tried to stop it. But I couldn’t.
An invisible force tugged at my forearm bringing the knife closer and closer to my neck.
The blade glinted under the moonlight.
My partner shouted. But I couldn’t listen.
I had to die.
And then I heard it.

“I take back what I said. The member of The Order are no longer bound by my command…”
My fingers loosened. The knife clattered to the road.

“You are all free now. Free from the curse, free from my voice, free to live without fear….
I staggered back, hand to my chest like I’d been hit. My partner groaned. Still breathing.
I dropped to my knees.
I didn’t remember why I’d wanted to die.
Why I’d tried to slit my throat.
But it was over now.
I wouldn’t do it again.
Why not?
I didn’t know. But I was certain it was done.

The old shepherd lay still on the table, breathing in short, wet gasps. Tumour in the lungs. Owner long gone. No one left to hold him.
I lifted the syringe. It was better this way. At least he’d go calmly.
But the needle turned towards me instead.
I blinked, unable to understand what was wrong.
The needle inched towards me, almost as if someone else was controlling my hand that held it.
I backed away, bumping into a table, medical supplies falling to the ground.
My pet dog began to bark. Loud. Desperate.
It sensed danger. So did I.
But neither of us knew how to stop it.
“No,” I whispered, as the needle reached my neck. This could kill me.
But then–
“You won’t remember this. Not the night it happened. Not me. Not each other…”

“You won’t search for each other. You won’t try to rebuild what was broken…”
I dropped the syringe. It bounced off the floor and rolled under the table.
I sank onto the stool, gasping like I’d surfaced from underwater. The dog blinked at me. Still here.
So was I.

The knife was sharp. One of those ceramic ones. I’d been chopping onions—fast, efficient.
A mosquito buzzed in my ear, then perched on the table right in front of me, distracting me from my masterpiece.
My jaw clenched, and I lifted my rolling pin.
I’d clean it later.
But then my hand paused mid air, dropping it to the ground.

It rolled away, while the knife in my free hand began to turn towards my throat.
And then I pressed the blade to my skin.
It was habit, almost. Like muscle memory.
I couldn’t feel much. Just this heavy fog behind my eyes.
Then the voice came.

“Let this end here. Let it stay buried. And let none of you ever bleed because of me again…”
I froze.
The blade slipped out of my hand. Hit the cutting board.
I stood there, breathing hard, staring at the onions I’d been slicing. Couldn’t remember why I felt so hopeless two seconds ago. But it was fading. Like steam off a pot.
I wiped my hands. I didn’t pick the knife back up.

The ceiling looked like it was moving. I’d been staring at it so long that my eyes had gone blurry.
My heart hurt. And so did my head.
I tried to pretend everything was fine.
That everything in my life, everything around me was normal.
But sometimes, I still imagined her as a goddess, high and mighty, rising above everything else.
I still got nightmares—Zane being a zombie, running after me in wolf form.
I still thought about the Blood Moon I’d watched from my window.
Sudden and terrifying.
Like smearing blood all over the sky.
Then the voice came.
Lia’s.
“But you won’t remember this. Not the night it happened…”
I jolted upright. My hands flew to my ears, but the voice wasn’t outside. It was in my head. Like she was whispering right into

“To you, peace will feel like the only thing that ever mattered.”
It was over in seconds. But it left something behind.
I didn’t cry. I didn’t move.
I just lay back down and stared at the same ceiling.
Sleep weighed down my eyelids.
Within seconds, I’d drifted off with thoughts of Nathan making me smile.
