A scream echoed off the four walls. Yvonne’s face tightened, her hands trembling as she gripped the sheets. Sweat soaked her body, and her legs were parted as the maids tended to her.
Gatha looked up. “Push harder, my lady. You’re almost there.”
Yvonne screamed, pain tearing through her guts, and in the next moment, the cries of a baby echoed.
Gatha held the child in her arms and gave Yvonne a look.
“Please don’t hurt my child,” she breathed, her chest heaving.
“Why? The king impregnated you to bare a male child and you’ve failed that task.”
“No,” Yvonne shook her head. “I don’t care about the king anymore. I just want my child, Gatha. You promised! You promised
to help me!” she yelled, ignoring the sting that slammed through her bones.
“Sure,” the old maid said flatly. “Prepare a bath,” she told the other maids, who bowed and left.
When it was only the two of them, Gatha approached with the child
“So what are you going to do now, sweetheart? Are you going to stay until the king finds out you birthed a girl?”
“We’ll tell him I had a son instead,” Yvonne countered.
The old maid raised a brow.
Yvonne quickly clutched her clothing. “I’ll give you whatever you want. You’re old, but I’m sure you have children of your own. I’ll treat them well. I’ll take them to high places–just please… do what I say.”
The mistress knew Brigid had begged this head maid the same way five times, but the old woman still killed those babies, so her hope was faint.
“I beg of you,” she plead harder. “I can’t lose my child. Please.”
Gatha glanced at the wailing child, then back at the mother. “Alright.”
Yvonne’s chest heaved, her shoulders slumping with relief. “Thank you. Oh, thank you.”
“Do not worry about the maids; I’ll shut them up. All you have to do is follow my lead.”
Yvonne nodded quickly. “I’ll do anything. Anything you want!”
For the past several hours, Toran hadn’t stopped screaming, thrashing things, and trembling. His eyes were bloodshot red, his breathing ragged, and his skin marred with scratches he had inflicted on himself.
The devil is here.
That was what she said. Real or dream, he didn’t know.
When they were at the top of that castle, terrified, she had released that rope after telling him:
‘If they ask what happened, tell them the devil is here to burn them all.‘
The world had turned black.
Then all of a sudden, he was back in his cell, struck by memories that kept haunting him like a dead bell.
“She is here! The devil is here! Why won’t anyone fucking believe me?!” He screamed, thrashing at the gates that held him in.
“Let me out! Let me out, you fucking assholes!!”

Valoreth, Damaris, and Sahrak were outside, hearing Toran’s vole in the distance.
“He has gone completely mad. The guilt has eaten him up to the depths. We should kill him,” Damaris suggested.
Valoreth remained silent as he walked. “Did anyone visit him last right?”

“The guards said they saw no one. The king has lost it completely, here’s no use for him. He is the reason things are falling apart,” Damaris‘ voice tinged with frustration.
Sahrak simply said nothing, his eyes darting frantically.
“My Lord!” A soldier rushed to them, bowing. “The mistress delivered a male child.”
Valoreth stiffened, Damaris‘ eyes widened, while Sahrak squinted. Then he blinked.
“Are you certain?” Valoreth asked, and the soldier nodded.
“We’ll make an announcement,” Damaris smiled. “This is great news. The best way to divert the realm’s attention.”
Valoreth continued to walk. Damaris and the soldier followed while Sahrak stayed behind with a small frown.
“That mistress must have a death wish blurting such a lie,” he mumbled, then glanced back at a corner, as if sensing someone, but decided to ignore it since it wasn’t his problem and left.
Around that corner, Brigid emerged. Thanks to her scent suppressants, the men were unable to detect her.
She still felt weak, and hearing what Toran had done, she couldn’t help her curiosity about what they were doing to him.
Reaching the gate, she ordered the guards to open it using her Queen’s royal scroll; they had no choice but to obey. She was led in, and her pulse quickened with each step.
There he was, in the cell, curled against the wall. His hands were buried in his disheveled hair as soft sobs wracked through him.
“Open the gate.”
“Your highness, Lord Val…”
She shot him a glare. “I’ll have your head if that’s what you want. Open. The. Gate.”
The guard obliged; the gate creaked open, and Brigid stormed in. She paused, noting how badly Toran was shivering like a leaf in a storm.
“Toran,” she called softly.
He sniffled, slowly raising his head. Brigid felt her insides collapse. He looked lean, disheveled, wrecked. Whatever it was… Toran was a mess. Like a man who had not slept or eaten for days.
But those hollow eyes lit up the moment he saw her.
“Fairy,” he whispered.
