The auctioneer’s grin widened. "Seven hundred thousand gold coins! Do I hear a higher bid?!"
Seven hundred thousand was already an incredible amount, and usually, no one would go higher than that, especially for an antique that didn’t look all that special.
But Edmund clearly wanted it. Without hesitation, he raised his paddle again and said calmly, "One million."
He didn’t say the number loudly, but it was enough to make the auctioneer and everyone else in the room gasp.
They even began to wonder how much money the Beast King actually had, and whether he was starving his people by wasting that much gold.
However, some of them also knew that, despite all the bad rumors about the beasts, there had never been a single one saying their king had ever let his people go hungry.
In fact, ever since Edmund became the King of Noctvaris, that kind of thing had never happened.
That was why the people in the auction house began thinking about something else.
Had the Lycan King sold his wife before this, and that was why he had so much money? Were the perfume and the music box not meant for Primrose, but for his new mate instead?
Sometimes... Primrose just wanted to split their heads open one by one and see how they managed to come up with such creative nonsense in their minds.
"One million!" the auctioneer finally said after snapping out of his shock. "Do I hear any bids higher than one million?!"
The room fell completely silent. From the look on Nina’s face, it was obvious she didn’t have more than seven hundred thousand gold coins to spend.
"Sold!" The auctioneer slammed his gavel three times. "This antique music box is sold for one million gold coins to His Majesty, the Beast King!"
[Damn it!] Nina cursed in her mind. [Why would His Majesty want that music box?! It even looks like crap! Or... did Her Majesty want it?]
[I could probably get access to the music box if I stay close to Her Majesty,] Nina sighed. [Who knows that my father’s stupid decision will end up helping me later.]
Primrose, on the other hand, couldn’t understand why Nina was so obsessed with that music box. Like she’d said before, it looked terrible, and the chances it still worked were basically zero.
That question also goes to her husband.
"Why did you want that music box?" Primrose finally asked Edmund once the auctioneer moved on to the next item.
Edmund went silent for a moment, and in his mind, he also began to wonder why he had been willing to spend a whole million just to buy that shabby-looking music box.
"I’m not sure," he said finally, turning to his wife. "But don’t you think it looks... interesting?"
Primrose watched as the music box was carried backstage, and for some reason, it did look somewhat interesting.
However, she couldn’t quite explain what exactly was so intriguing about that shabby-looking box. Or maybe, it had some kind of magic, and had bewitched both of them at the same time.
"Yes, it does look kind of interesting," Primrose finally said. Then she shook her head a few times, trying to pull her gaze away from it. "Husband, we should probably leave this place."
Edmund blinked several times. "Why? There are still many items that haven’t been displayed yet."
"That’s exactly why we should go now," Primrose replied. "We’ve already spent more than one million six hundred thousand gold coins today. I don’t want to spend any more than that."
Or rather, she didn’t want Edmund to spend any more than that.
Edmund let out a small chuckle. "Are you worried I’ll go on a shopping spree?"
"I’m worried you’ll buy the entire auction house next," Primrose muttered under her breath.
She stood up first and pulled Edmund’s hand, leading him out of that damn place. No wonder people often said the auction house was a devil’s den.
For someone like Edmund, that might not be a problem since he had plenty of money. But for people addicted to such things, like Nina, a place like this was no different from a demon that slowly sucked the life out of them.
