And you were thinking of stifling her, even locking her up? If that gets out, where would our Kent family’s face go? Do we have no dignity left?!”

Mr. Simon still tried to argue, “But Dad, she-”

“Shut up!” Mr. Clark barked. “I’m not dead yet. This isn’t your place to meddle. The money must be paid–every cent of it. And from now on, none of you are to trouble the little doctor again. If you cause her offense, I’ll throw you out of the Kent family myself!”

Simon and his wife hadn’t expected the old man to be this harsh. Heads bowed, they dared not make a sound.

Gordon chimed in gently, “Dad, don’t get upset. I understand what needs to be done. Simon, Wendy–listen to Dad. Don’t stir up trouble again.”

Mr. Clark grunted, no longer bothering with those two, and turned to Gordon.

“Go bring the doctor here. I want to thank her in person.”

Soon after, Gordon led Sloane into the room.

Mr. Clark looked at her with deep gratitude.

“Little doctor, I owe you my life. If not for your miraculous hands, this old body of mine would already be cold in the ground. My son and daughter–in–law were ignorant before- please don’t take offense.”

Sloane offered a faint smile, her expression composed.

“You’re too polite, Mr. Clark. Your family paid the fee, and I provided the treatment. It was just

a transaction.”

Sensing her displeasure, Mr. Clark summoned the younger couple.

“What are you two standing there for? Apologize to the doctor.”

Though reluctant, Mr. Simon and Madam Wendy had no choice under the old man’s authority. They stepped forward stiffly, heads down.

“Little doctor,” Simon said through clenched teeth, “we were wrong before. Please forgive us.”

Sloane wasn’t moved. She saw right through them but responded lightly,

Mr. Clark shot the couple a hard glare, then turned back to Sloane.

“As for the treatment fees–rest assured, doctor, you’ll get every penny. I’ll have Gordon handle it now. You focus on the treatment, and we’ll pay on schedule.”

Sloane took the check and calmly continued,

Gordon nodded eagerly and took the paper. “Don’t worry, doctor. I’ll have someone handle it right away.”

Sloane added, “I’ve accepted the payment. You can be sure I’ll see this through and finish

treatment.”
